Job overview

To deliver a high standard of patient care whilst working as part of the Pre Assessment and Endoscopy Team and displaying a caring and professional attitude at all times. The post holder will be expected to exhibit specific skills in the management of disorders of the Upper and Lower gastrointestinal tract. 

The primary aim of the Endoscopy Service is to provide a high quality, comprehensive endoscopy facility for all of our patients. We aim to ensure that the service offered allows for sufficient capacity and facilities to offer our patients timely and appropriate care.

 

Main duties of the job

The Endoscopy Pre assessment Nurse will be hosting telephone and face to face pre assessment clinics for patients requiring endoscopic procedures. This will involve giving clear guidance on bowel preparation and advice to the patient on their diet pre and post procedure. You will need to address any issues that may arise prior and post to the patient attending for their endoscopy procedures such as the management of the patient’s medications and assessing any pre-existing medical conditions which could impact their endoscopic procedure. These clinics aim to enhance the patient's endoscopy experience from referral through to discharge, particularly by putting the patients mind at ease by answering any questions and dealing with any concerns. As a skilled member of the team you will develop and maintain good patient care, organisational skills and assist in the provision of a high level of care. It is essential that the post holder can work within a diverse, multidisciplinary team providing autonomous decision making and be aware of their limitations in accordance with NMC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively with the immediate and extended Endoscopy MDT on both sites
  • Assisting in the direct delivery and management of the Pre-assessment services.
  • Acting as the patient advocate supporting them to navigate and make informed choices at all stages of the process.
  • Promoting health promotion strategies
  • Supporting the senior nurses in the development of the service
  • Supporting the team with clinical governance, quality assurance and quality management systems.
  • Ensuring that patient data are collected to meet trust and JAG requirements
  • The ability to evaluate the service
  • Working collaboratively to ensure audit of the service is in line with National Guidelines
  • If you have Endoscopy experience to support and work in the Endoscopy unit to maintain your skills.

  • Maintain good relationships between all members of staff, thus maintaining professionalism throughout the unit and the pre assessment process
  • Ensure good communication verbally and via formal documentation and electronic sources with all members of the nursing, multidisciplinary team, patients and families/carers
  • Assist in the problem solving strategies to enhance patient care

  • Communicate with senior colleagues regarding changes in circumstances, which may affect safe practice
  • Ensure that accurate records and information systems are maintained

  • Continually monitor standards of practice making changes where appropriate through audit.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN LEVEL 1
  • Registered with the NMC
  • Evidence of continuing professional development CPD
Desirable criteria
  • MSPP or equivalent
  • Gastrointestinal nurses course
  • Diploma/Degree in health related subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of clinical governance and audit
  • Experience of working in partnership with the MDT to deliver clinical care
  • Awareness of current nursing issues
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the GI Tract and Endoscopy procedures
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of JAG and GRS
  • Knowledge of appropriate standards and external bodies (CQC)

Knowledge
