Job overview

Applications are invited from enthusiastic, experienced chemotherapy nurses to join our dedicated team.  You will need to be chemotherapy competent and have extensive experience in caring for oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

 We are a nurse led unit with excellent patient experience feedback; we are looking for a highly motivated passionate nurse to complement our team.  Clinical supervision is available as well as full support for personal development.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of care to patients who attend the chemotherapy unit for treatment and other supportive therapies.

To work with the multi-disciplinary teams, Oncology Consultants, and site specific Clinical Nurse Specialists to provide a seamless service for patients with cancer, their relatives and carers.

To ensure that cytotoxic drugs, blood transfusions and other treatments are administered in a safe manner in a nurse-led setting. It is expected that the post holder will be responsible for their own decisions regarding care, with the support of senior nurses.

You will need to be able to demonstrate key skills as an experienced nurse as well as extensive knowledge and expert experience in delivering chemotherapy treatments.  You will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, supportive care experience and the ability to work autonomously, whist ensuring patients and their family’s needs are met.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To ensure that cytotoxic drugs, blood transfusions and other treatments are administered in a safe manner in a nurse-led setting. It is expected that the post holder will be responsible for their own decisions regarding care, with the support of senior nurses.

To ensure patients and their carers receive ongoing support throughout their treatment.

The post holder will be expected to work closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialists, the multi-disciplinary teams, Consultant Oncologists, and other appropriate professionals involved in the patient’s care pathway.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • RGN • Post graduation study/Haematology/Oncology course. • SACT accredited course/Passport • Evidence degree level study
Desirable criteria
  • • BSC/MSC • Mentorship/teaching

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Proven experience post registration oncology/chemotherapy • Proficient in Cannulation and venepuncture. • Leadership skills. • Extensive experience in the administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy. • Care of central venous access devices
Desirable criteria
  • • BSC/MSC • Mentorship/teaching

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of cancer and chemotherapy treatments. • Understanding of the need of confidentiality awareness at all times. • Cytotoxic treatments and management of treatment side effects • Current relevant research • Team working
