NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor

Job overview

Applications are open for an exciting trainee breast clinician role. The Breast Clinician role encompasses the clinical and breast imaging services, providing a holistic approach to all aspects of breast disease diagnosis and management. The posts offer comprehensive training in breast radiology, clinical skills and breast cancer risk analysis, and will enable candidates to become independent breast specialists and to lead family history clinics upon completion of the three year programme.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will complete the Credential in Breast Disease Management training programme, which is supported by NHS England (NHSE) and was developed by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), the Association of Breast Clinicians (ABC) and the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA) in 2019. If you are interested in breast disease management and are looking for a career change or family-friendly career, this unique training opportunity could be for you.

This role is due to commence by August 2024 for a period of three years on a fulltime basis, or the less than full time equivalent duration. Applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time are welcomed. However, candidates must be able to work at least three days per week (i.e. 0.6WTE).

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK. The minimum entry criteria include a minimum of four years’ post graduate medical experience, but we would welcome applicants with wider experience from other specialties or general practice. For full entry and selection criteria, please see the person specification.

These posts are not designed for established breast clinicians or those wishing to pursue a surgical career.

Upon successful completion of the credential, candidates are eligible to apply for SAS Doctor positions as qualified breast clinicians

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is part of an exciting initiative to standardise training in breast disease management, via the Credential in Breast Disease Management (“the Credential”).  The Credential was developed by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), the Association of Breast Clinicians (ABC), and the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA) and is supported by NHS England. It provides high quality, structured training in breast radiology, breast cancer risk prediction and prevention, and outpatient management of breast surgical patients. On completion of the Credential, the post holder will support the delivery of symptomatic and screening breast services, family history breast clinics and breast clinical services. This post is funded jointly by NHSE, via the NBIA, and Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful applicant will access high quality training allied to the current training in radiology but dedicated to breast imaging with additional training in clinical and family history assessment. There is a formal indicative 3-year training curriculum, closely based on the clinical radiology specialty training curriculum, which has been drafted in line with the GMC’s standards for post-graduate training. The training will be supervised by a dedicated GMC registered educational supervisor, and clinical supervisors for each of the three main areas of training (surgery, radiology and family history).  Annual reviews of progression, run by the RCR will be undertaken to assess progress and award the credential at the completion of the programme.

During this 3-year WTE training programme the post holder will develop all the necessary knowledge and skills to provide clinical and imaging expertise in symptomatic and screening services and to lead family history breast clinics.

This post is not designed for established breast clinicians or those wishing to pursue a surgical career.

The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D) has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The Hospital has an excellent track record of financial and senior executive stability.

The Trust has University Hospital status which provides an academic environment to the hospital. In addition to postgraduate training, we welcome medical students from the UCL Medical School throughout the year and by arrangement with the medical school provide a programme of clinical placements to support their education. We have an excellent reputation for junior staff training.   Within the Centre of Multi-Professional Educational & Training (COMET) is the Medical Education Department, the library including an IT suite, and the Training & Development Department.  The main aim of the Medical Education Department is to promote postgraduate and continuing medical education and training for all doctors and dentists. The Hospital actively promotes career development and progression for all staff.

The Hospital has excellent access to the surrounding areas with easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden.  Excellent schools are found nearby.  There is also very good access to the Midlands and North by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of the Luton’s three stations.  A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop that is within a short walking distance of the hospital.  London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes of the hospital.

Applicants must be fully registered with the UK General Medical Council, and have a minimum of 12 years post graduate clinical experience with a minimum of 6 years in relevant specialty.

Candidates unable for personal reasons to work full-time are also invited to apply.

The appointment will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidates prior to commencement.

Please refer to the Job Description for full details of the post.
