An opportunity exists to join a dedicated and enthusiastic POCT team at Bedford Hospital, working in conjunction with colleagues on the Luton and Dunstable site.  POCT at Bedfordshire Hospitals Foundation Trust provides one of only a few UKAS accredited POCT services within the country. The POCT repertoire covers Haematology, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology 

 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will spend time moving around the hospital site carrying out hospital staff training, equipment maintenance and ensuring the service provided both to the patient and by the POC team is of a high quality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    To organise their own workload within the POCT team, planning and preparing their schedule which will include working unsupervised and under their own initiative

2.    To work within the POCT team running External Quality Assurance and Internal Quality Control samples and to perform maintenance and troubleshooting tasks on POCT equipment

3.    To keep accurate and precise records including those of training, IQC and EQA schemes

4.    To undertake audit and evaluation of POCT equipment within the POCT team

5.    To answer telephone enquiries maintaining a professional and polite manner at all times

6.    To maintain stock levels for POCT equipment and inform staff when stock needs to be ordered.  To receive and appropriately store and record deliveries for POCT equipment

7.    To follow POCT policies and procedures in their work; to keep up to date with developments in POCT; and to propose changes to procedures and policies in order to contribute to continual development of the POCT team

8.    To attend POCT Management Group meetings, POCT team meetings and other meetings as required

9.    To liaise and maintain good working relationships with users of the POCT service in the Trust, from HCAs and administrators to Consultants and Ward Managers to ensure they have the support they require

10.    To report clinical issues and any problems or difficulties encountered to the POCT site co-ordinator, or the appropriate Clinical Scientist in their absence 

11.    To train small groups of staff in the theory and practical use of POCT equipment

12.    To observe strict confidentiality in relation to patients and their treatment

13.    To be aware of the safety regulations operating in the Trust and to perform their duties in such a manner so as not to endanger the health and safety of fellow workers, patients or the general public

14.    To receive an annual appraisal from line manager and keep up to date with statutory training requirements

15.    To carry out any other reasonable duties as assigned by the POCT site coordinator.

  • Science subject A level GCE
Desirable criteria
  • Additional training qualifications in science based subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of Pathology laboratory environment.
  • Evidence of ability to loan work
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of POCT equipment
