Job overview

An exciting new opportunity to join the Primrose Unit as  a Nursing Associate is available. 

You will have a supervisory and clinical role within the Primrose Unit under the supervision of a registered nurse delivering care to patients undergoing systemic anti cancer treatment (SACT).

Main duties of the job

You will need to be able to organise and prioritise effectively,  demonstrating sound clinical skills and excellent communication skills to meet the following duties:

  • To lead, supervise, support and work with the existing team of clinical support workers
  • To oversee the smooth running of outpatient oncology clinics
  • To undertake and manage PICC/PORT Clinics
  • Administer SC /IM medications.

  1. To provide skilled nursing care under the supervision of the nurse providing care, undertaking routine and specifically identified tasks. This will include but is not limited to patient observation, phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring and, ECG’s, scalp cooling, removal peripheral cannulas.
  2. Requesting appropriate investigations via ICE following instruction from registered nurses and medical team.
  3. Prepare and restore the environment for clinical procedures with minimal supervision.
  4. Undertake PICC line dressing, take bloods and flush lines with sodium chloride following appropriate training.
  5. Access TVADS, take bloods and flush lines with sodium chloride following appropriate training.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of General education
  • 5 GCSE's or equivalent
  • Registered nursing associate on the NMC register
  • Educated to foundation degree level of specific to nursing associate practice or equivalent
  • Venepuncture/cannulation course
  • Evidence of further personal development
Desirable criteria
  • Foundation communication skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial clinical experience within acute hospital setting both in outpatients and inpatients
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience of working in oncology / chemo unit
  • Managing PICCS/PORTS

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of multi-disciplinary team working
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of cancer & Palliative Care
  • Knowledge of TVAD's/PICC lines
  • Knowledge of NHS Practice
  • Knowledge of NHS IT systems
