Job overview

To join our dynamic team as a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Clinical Engineer, you will assume responsibility for maintaining, calibrating, and repairing a diverse array of electrical and biomedical specialist equipment utilized at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS FT. Your role encompasses ensuring that medical devices adhere to industry standards, resolving technical issues, and collaborating with various departments to enhance equipment performance. As an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, you will commission and conduct acceptance testing on new medical devices, as well as undertake planned maintenance, repairs, fault-finding, and electrical safety testing on intricate medical equipment. Your scope will involve managing equipment such as life support, patient monitoring, patient therapy, diagnostics, ventilators, and anaesthetic equipment, which may occasionally be connected to patients. Furthermore, you will participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency 24-hour coverage. The ideal candidate will demonstrate robust technical expertise, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and a steadfast commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and reliability in medical equipment

Main duties of the job

•    This is a senior engineer position within the Clinical Engineering Department.
•    The post is as the lead technical specialist providing technical expertise to support the clinical application of a wide range of complex and patient critical medical devices within the main work area. The main work area within the hospital will be critical area including NNU and Maternity and as an additional support for ITU and theatres at the start of employment but will be subject to change, depending on the work pressures of the department. The role could involve a rotational cover of all the clinical areas covered by the team.
•    The post holder also takes responsibility for the training of other team members in the equipment and applications in their specialist area, and provides technical expertise, supervision and training to other engineers as required.
•    The position also involves supervising workshop activities and stepping in for other specialized senior engineers when necessary.

  • To provide specialist clinical technical support in all aspects relating to the preventive maintenance, inspection, repair and calibration of a wide range of complex patient-critical medical equipment in a safe and professional manner in accordance with department procedures, Trust policies, statutory regulations and the MHRA Managing Medical Devices Feb 2021 edition.
  • Carryout equipment performance checks to OEM’s specification including electrical safety testing.
  • Effective fault finding involving complex communication with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment.
  • The supervision of junior biomedical engineering staff under your technical control, and the supervision of specialist contract staff carrying out maintenance on Trust premises.
  • Quality Assurance checks on Life Support, Anaesthetic and transfer Equipment which may be connected to critically ill patients.
  • Respond to emergency calls as a priority.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Medical Engineering Degree or Equivalent Qualification and Experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development e.g. attendance at training courses (manufacturers and specialist)
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Professional Organisation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant relevant experience within an EBME department
  • Significant planned and corrective experience on: Anaesthesia Units, Ventilators Electro surgery, Neonatal Incubators, Patient Monitoring Equipment, Defibrillators, Infusion Devices, Suction Units, Endoscopy stack systems, and Operating Tables
  • Experience of medical device operation and management
  • Knowledge and experience of using Medical Equipment Management Software
Desirable criteria
  • Previous investigative experience with regards to medical device performance or adverse incident related issues
  • Experience in managing and supervising staff and others
  • Planned and corrective maintenance experience on: Hospital Beds, Treatment Couches, Patient Trolleys, Wheelchairs, Patient Hoists, Weighing Scales

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medical device support including; preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and health service procurement
  • Logical fault finding methodology
  • Good level of knowledge and understanding of infection prevention and hazards in a healthcare environment
  • Conversant with: MHRA document Managing Medical Devices, The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, The Health and Safety at Work Act

Personal Skills / Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to understand and interpret circuit diagrams
  • Developed practical skills on a broad range of electro-medical equipment
  • Computer literate
