The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) provides clinical and professional advice and leadership in healthcare science across the health and care system. The CSO is the head of profession for a workforce of over 56,000 healthcare scientists in the NHS, encompassing more than 54 distinct scientific specialisms. The Office of the CSO promotes the better use of science to tackle our most significant health challenges and drive technological advances, ensuring people lead happier and healthier lives. NHS healthcare scientists employ their scientific and technical skills to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases, uniquely positioned within an integrated health system renowned for transformational science such as genomics.
The team also focuses on developing the professional, clinical, and system leadership capacity and capability of healthcare scientists. These scientists are well-placed to offer frontline scientific leadership and science-based intelligence for innovation, service planning, and delivery. By pushing the NHS to operate at the forefront of science, the Office of the CSO can enhance service integration, create new care delivery methods, empower patients in their care, and improve the NHS's research and innovation capabilities, as well as the adoption of cutting-edge health technologies.

We are seeking a Senior Science Lead to join our dynamic team of scientists, working alongside project managers and policymakers across NHS England. The role supports the Office of the Chief Scientific Officer in delivering NHS England’s objectives by offering expertise and professional leadership within the scientific and diagnostic community. The post holder will collaborate with colleagues across the system, providing influence and advice to improve patient quality and outcomes and integrate innovation into healthcare.
We are looking for a healthcare scientist who can influence and engage all levels of the system, offering healthcare science expertise across clinical pathways. The ideal candidate will identify opportunities for improvement in scientific and diagnostic pathways, lead the implementation of innovation and improvement plans across all clinical pathways, provide strategic direction to OCSO priority programs, and support Regional Healthcare Science Leads in coordinating and implementing deliverables at regional and local levels.

- Educated to masters level in healthcare science or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
- Accountable for developing and delivering scientific strategy, promoting innovation and supporting operational excellence in the Scientific Sector. Working with a range of scientific data, facts and situations often requiring detailed analysis and interpretation making decisions on the most appropriate approach.
- Ability to Budget set across a range of scientific services/areas/programmes, managing and monitoring related activity, liaising with finance colleagues to ensure appropriate costing and ensure compliance with Standing Financial instructions and Standing Orders.
- Ability to manage, motivate, inspire and develop staff within the team to ensure that they are able to deliver the responsibilities of NHS England.
- Ability to develop a scientific innovation strategy including research and development to identify, develop and promote scientific best practice.
- Ability to work across multiple agencies both within and outside of the NHS, equivalent to a directorate when compared to other NHS provider organisations.
