Job overview

The School Nursing service is commissioned to deliver the Healthy Child Programme,  providing information, support, and access to interventions for school aged children, young people, and their families. The overarching aim of public health services for children (5-19) is to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of children and families by using the i-Thrive approach, information and support informed by the latest evidence and provided at the right time. This service is led by School Nurses and supported by a skill mix team. The service is central to delivering public health outcomes for children.

Main duties of the job

Community Public Health School Nurses will support the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme in Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire, ensuring equitable access for children, young people and families to information and support in their own community that includes schools. You will also be expected to:

  • Work collaboratively with other agencies, for example schools, to promote health and wellbeing and improve early identification of need and risks to child outcomes which includes the running of school-based drop-in clinics.
  • Deliver agreed 'Support Packages' to children, young people, and families, which are short term, time limited evidence-based interventions while demonstrating an understanding of the importance for the child of ending a specified intervention.
  • Plan, facilitate and evaluate specific public health interventions such as road shows with support from line manager and SCPHN School Nurses.
  • Actively participate in supporting students of all levels through the provision of placement support, supervision, assessment, and development opportunities.
