THIS POST IS FIXED TERM/SECONDMENT FOR 12 MONTHS DUE TO MATERNITY COVER.

The post holder will work to support the role of the perinatal mental health practitioners and specialist perinatal mental health midwife in providing a service to women experiencing moderate to severe perinatal mental health issues and their families. Successful post holder will also be expected to participate in the delivery of interventions. Based within various community settings. He/she will also support women being admitted or discharged from specialist mother and baby units, under direction from the perinatal practitioners. He/she will take a key role in delivering parent support; health promotion and expected to work towards meeting the national competency framework requirements. The post holder will be a team player and contribute to the overall health care offered to individuals, families and communities.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated individual with an interest in perinatal mental health. This is a role within our specialist team that works across the whole of the BCUHB area. 

The team is multi-disciplinary and works directly with women and their families providing assessment, interventions and support for pregnant women and women within the postnatal period with a range of mental health needs.

The team works closely with colleagues from maternity, children’s services, neonatal services and adult mental health (both in patient services and community teams) they offer joined up care and provide specialist knowledge and guidance relating to Perinatal Mental Health

The post holder will be involved in the development of the nursery nurse role within the service whilst building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.

The nursery nurses will offer one-to-one and group interventions to support mothers to develop skills and confidence in caring for their baby and to promote the mother and baby relationship.

Whilst it is not required to have past perinatal mental health experience, it is desirable that applicants will have knowledge of child development and attachment theories to help inform the nursery nurse interventions alongside the ability to recognize and respond to changes in a woman’s mental health which may impact upon the safety of her or her baby.
