Job overview

Due to retirement we are looking for a new Mortuary Manager to support the Mortuary and Bereavement services in BCUHB.

At BCUHB we have mortuary and bereavement units at our 3 main acute hospitals, which will come under the leadership of the Mortuary Manager. The post holder will be the lead for the Regional Mortuary Service, working autonomously and liaising with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies including the Police, H.M. Coroner and their Officers, Medical Examiners Service, Medical staff and other Health Care Professionals.

Working alongside service managers the post holder will develop strategic and operational pathways for the service. Working to develop, implement and maintain departmental policies and procedures.

 

Main duties of the job

In this interesting and varied role, you will have responsibility for the line management and supervision of site-based Mortuary and Bereavement Service, providing strong leadership to all staff and budget and financial management within defined budget allocation.

You will act as a professional role model engaging all staff in the Health Board values, maintaining patient/relative privacy, dignity and respect at all times ensuring positive relative experience in all aspects of after life care, sharing good practice within the Mortuary and Bereavement service and ensuring staff/deceased and bereaved relatives' safety at all times.

You will have overarching responsibility for the designation and storage of the deceased and be responsible for ordering and purchasing equipment, recording and overseeing lawful disposal of human tissue, products of conception and Police Forensic exhibits and logging, upholding the Human Tissue Authority Licence safe storage and return of deceased patients' property.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A Master’s Degree in a recognised speciality or the ability to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience and be working towards a Masters/Level 7 course within a agreed timeframe upon appointment.
  • SPH Diploma/Level 4 in Anatomical Pathology Technology (Minimum of five years post qualification experience)
  • Supervisory/Management qualification
  • Knowledge in developing pathways within the Mortuary
  • High level of knowledge in dealing with the deceased from different religious faiths
  • Has significant highly specialist knowledge on Mortuaries, fatalities and the bereavement process
  • Knowledge of current Mortuary practice.
  • Current knowledge and experience of routine hospital post mortems, high risk cases, Coroner’s cases, Forensic work and paediatrics.
  • Knowledge of documentation required after death.
  • Knowledge of legislation associated with death and organ retention, UKAS, CQC and RCPath guidelines
  • Knowledge and understanding of the HTA codes of practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists
  • UK DVI Membership
  • Eye /Corneal Retrieval Training
  • Knowledge of Best Practice set out by the AAPT
  • European Computer Driving Licence
  • Educated to Degree level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience working as a qualified APT
  • Evidence of effective team working and a positive approach to work
  • Experience of training junior APT’s and support staff. Teaching others in mortuary operations.
  • Experience of involvement in HTA and/or UKAS inspection
  • Experience is conducting audits, formulating risk assessments/SOPs and investigating incidents.
  • Experience in recruitment and selection of staff

  • Good level of IT skills – Outlook (email), word, excel
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own workload and meetings
  • Able to empathise and communicate effectively with bereaved relatives regarding sensitive issues
  • Able to supervise a team and co-ordinate their activities to achieve planned goals and objectives
  • Able to make complex analytical judgements and resolution of process problems with mortuary capacity
  • Team leader/management skills
