Main duties of the job
We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and conscientious band 5 respiratory sleep/Long term ventilation and research physiologist to join the paediatric sleep physiology department at Southampton Children's Hospital. We are one of a handful of comprehensive paediatric sleep centres in the UK serving a population of 3.5M covering a large geographical area. We are looking for a physiologist with an interest in both clinical and research aspects of sleep and ventilation
The department consists of a team of physiologists and nurses who work closely with our long term ventilation team. There is a 24/7 clinical home and inpatient service. This runs ventilation titration nights which the postholder will contribute to. There is an active research agenda with several ongoing studies. All team members are supported to present and submit research for publication. The postholder will with support provide research leadership for funded grants and other studies ensuring they are conducted within the good clinical practice framework. Their development will be supported.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
WHAT YOU’LL DO
This new post will be split evenly between clinical and academic activities. Please note that the clinical activities will include night shifts.
• The clinical role will involve organising and running clinics where families are trained to use home sleep study equipment and analyse and provide specialist interpretation of the sleep study results for the Respiratory paediatricians. On two to three scheduled (according to rota) nights per month you will also run ‘LTV titration’ sleep studies. On these nights you will admit patients, apply sleep study sensors, monitor physiologic signals, and adjust ventilator settings according to a prescription and standardised protocols.
• The research role will involve supporting our grant funded research portfolio alongside supporting other projects. You will, with support from the senior clinicians take forward our research program ensuring that all studies are compliant with good clinical practice. The role will involve interpretation of research sleep studies and liaison with other centres as part of our multicentre work.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for an enthusiastic physiologist with formal training to a BSc or equivalent level, or with very specific equivalent training and experience in a Respiratory or Sleep Laboratory or similar clinical environment. You must have:
• the ability, availability and flexibility to work 2-3 night shifts per month
• the ability to communicate with a wide range of people in a variety of settings
• the ability to work independently, assessing and intervening as necessary to ensure patient safety
• the ability to work with respiratory equipment and trouble shoot problems
• good organisation skills and effective time management

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Scientific knowledge acquired through formal training to Healthcare Science BSc (Respiratory) or equivalent level, or specific equivalent training and experience
- Experience working in a Respiratory or Sleep Physiology Laboratory or similar clinical environment
- Relevant clinical experience
- Knowledge and understanding of carrying out sleep studies
Desirable criteria
- Experience in care and maintenance of respiratory and sleep equipment, including ventilators
- Knowledge and experience of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Research Governance Framework and are compliant with the EU Directive for clinical trials
