Applications are invited for Specialty Doctor posts in the Wessex Neurological Intensive Care Unit within UHS, to start August 2025. This is a permanent post with a 10 PA contract. The post is suitable for senior registrar-level doctors or equivalent who wish to enhance their knowledge and clinical experience in neurocritical care and neuroanaesthesia and who already have some experience of working in either of these areas and appropriate qualifications to do so.
This post participates in a 1 in 9 full shift rota. You would be well supported by dedicated Consultant input. The 13 Neuro ICU Consultants have varying backgrounds or interests in a number of fields: pre-hospital emergency medicine, trauma, aeromedical transfers, anaesthesia and neuroanaesthesia, intensive care, general internal medicine, rehabilitation medicine, research and academia.
You will need advanced competence in the airway management of the critically unwell patient as well as prior experience working in anaesthesia and critical care for a minimum of at least 24 months. Successful attainment of the FRCA Primary, final FFICM or EDIC exam is a mandatory requirement. The Wessex Neuro ICU is a 13-bed dedicated Neurological Intensive Care Unit. The Unit admits approximately 800 patients per annum, usually comprising in the region of: 300 severe neurological trauma injuries (brain and/or spinal injuries with complex polytrauma), 150 subarachnoid haemorrhages, 100 emergency neurosurgical cases, 200 elective neurosurgical cases, approximately 50 acute neurological cases (demyelinating polyneuropathies, autoimmune encephalitis etc) as well as some general medical and surgical cases.
Full support for study leave will be given. Specialty doctors are encouraged to participate in the many ongoing clinical research trials within the Wessex Neurological Centre and present at relevant regional, national and international meetings with full funding available for this. Our sub-speciality team have recently been named Team of the Year at the Intensive Care Society Awards 2023 and we are proud to have a hugely talented multidisciplinary group of individuals who contribute to our excellent patient outcomes. The Unit is recognised nationally by the UK Intensive Care Medicine speciality training committee for training in Intensive Care Medicine.
Previous specialty doctors have gone on to gain successful CESR accreditation in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine and take up Consultant posts within our Unit and at other UK teaching hospitals. Our feedback in providing training and development in these areas is consistently excellent. Opportunities for CESR accreditation and modules in the sub-specialty areas of anaesthesia and intensive care covering paediatrics, neurosciences and cardiac will be encouraged.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Specialty Doctors – England (2021) Salary will be assessed in line with terms and conditions.
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Working as a doctor for 5 years or longer since gaining medical degree
- Essential examination: FRCA Primary, EDIC or FFICM
- Previous work for a minimum of 24 months in NHS anaesthesia and intensive care
- Completion of 3-6 month attainment of the anaesthetic “Initial Assessment of Competence” (IAC) Certificate or equivalent demonstrating airway competence
- Completion of Stage 1 UK RCoA-recognised anaesthetic training or Stage 1 higher ICM training

- Advanced life support certification (ALS or equivalent)
- Additional work in NHS Intensive Care Unit/s
- Previous work in other acute specialty
Aptitudes and skills

- IT skills
- Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Core ICU practical & transfer skills: WBPA evidence or equivalent, independent practice
- Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
