Main duties of the job

  • To be a professional role model, leading and co-ordinating the specialty team. Take continuing responsibility and accountability for the 24-hour management and organisation of the department. This involves managing a wide range of complex and sometimes conflicting priorities.
  • Provide specialist perioperative advice Trust wide to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with the local and national targets.
  • Ensure that patient care remains the top priority at all times, placing their needs, safety and well-being at the centre of every decision md action.
  • Maintain a flexible approach to clinical duties, adapting to changing needs and providing cover across specified areas as required to ensure seamless patient care.

Person specification

Education/ qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse or Registered Practitioner (confirmed through NMC / HCPC / professional body)
  • Minimum requirement of Degree qualification and post registration qualification applicable to specialist area.
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent teaching experience
Desirable criteria
  • Critical Care qualification or ALS/ILS
  • Evidence of research, audit or service improvement projects.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years recent and varied experience in acute surgical speciality
  • Level 2/3 critical care experience
  • Minimum of 12 months recent experience in managing or supervising a clinical team
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in 2 or more Trusts, or evidence of varied experience within 1 Trust

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria
  • A professional role model. Practices according to policy and NMC Code
  • Able to care effectively and compassionately for a group of patients if required
  • Comfortable with challenging any poor practice
  • Experienced in change implementation
