Consultant Paediatric Haematologist (Focus: Non Malignant Haematology)

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for two highly motivated, ambitious individuals to join our well integrated team. This is a replacement post, as well as a new post.  

These posts are part of the service development to centralise and develop paediatric haematology, to consolidate expertise in the department and focus primarily on non-malignant haematology and leukaemia. The Great North Children’s Hospital provides specialist paediatric haematology across a large area encompassing the North East and North West of England with most of the care being delivered centrally. Newcastle is the regional sickle cell and haemoglobinopathy centre with a designated Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team; it is a high prevalence area for haemoglobinopathy patients within the region and referrals are continuing to rise requiring significant development of the service. We are looking for motivated individuals to help drive forward this exciting phase within paediatric haematology in Newcastle. The candidate must be able to evidence relevant expertise and training. The post is open to those who hold FRCPath (or equivalent) and have relevant paediatric experience, as well as candidates who have trained as paediatricians and can demonstrate relevant training in haematology.

Main duties of the job

There is one replacement post and one new post to expand and develop the regional paediatric haematology service after centralisation of services into one department based in the Great North Children’s Hospital. This follows expansion of patient numbers and will allow consolidation of consultant areas of interest feeding into the stem cell transplant and cellular therapies service. 

Depending on the interests and expertise of the candidates this may include clinical management of patients with non-malignant conditions including haemoglobinopthies and malignant haematological disorders. 
Haemostasis and Thrombosis services are provided by the adult haematology team in Royal Victoria Infirmary and are not included in the paediatric haematology service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical
•    The main focus of the post is to support and develop the non-malignant service including laboratory, consultative as well as malignant haematology. 
 
Non-malignant haematology:
•    Responsibility for patients with non-malignant haematological disorders including rare inherited anaemias. This includes the regional Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team service in conjunction with the Regional Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centres in Manchester, for Thalassaemia, and Sheffield, for Haemoglobinopathies. 

Malignant haematology
•    Clinical care of patients treated at the Primary Treatment Centre at GNCH. This would primarily involve the lymphoblastic leukaemia patients however there may be opportunities patient groups depending on expertise and experience. The management of lymphoma, myeloid leukaemias and relapsed leukaemias come under specific teams currently. 

Laboratory and consultative haematology duties:
•    Suitably qualified (FRCPath or equivalent) individuals would be expected to contribute to the paediatric haematology laboratory service. This includes support of biomedical scientist staff across the core haematology laboratory and reporting referred paediatric blood films and the reporting of bone marrow aspirates and CSF cytospin slides 
•    Bone marrow trephines are reported by the regional SIHMDS (NEHODS). The post-holder will be encouraged to develop specific areas of responsibility within the laboratory. 
•    The post holder will be expected to contribute to the liaison haematology with secondary and tertiary services across the regional subspecialties and general paediatrics. 

Bone Marrow Transplant: 
•    Depending on areas of interest, there may be an opportunity for pre and post transplant care of patients with haematological disorders treated within GNCH. These patients are managed by the Stem Cell Transplant team. 

Advanced Cellular Therapies:
•    The Great North Children’s Hospital is one of the 3 UK centres Commissioned for CAR-T therapies for children and young people (up to 18 years of age). As well as licensed products, we have an early phase trail products available and be well positioned to develop CAR-T and other cellular therapies for other indications in the future.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
  • Special skills and training in Paediatric Haematology
  • A minimum of 12 months’ experience in paediatric haematology (applicants without MRCPCH are recommended to have a minimum of 2 years paediatric haematology experience)
  • Minimum of 12 months’ experience in general paediatrics
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • FRCPath or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience of clinical and laboratory haematology
  • Specific experience and interest in Paediatric Haematology
  • Paediatric Haematology training in a recognised training centre
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of children with haematological illness referred to a tertiary centre
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion in children with haematological illness

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals
  • Evidence of leadership / project management

Teaching
