We are looking for a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) to join our adult rotation across 3 acute hospitals Charing Cross (CXH), St Mary’s (SMH) and Hammersmith (HH). The postholder rotates to each site, and spends one rotation within Stroke on the hyper-acute and acute stroke units. Each site has unique specialisms, eg HH specialises in renal, cardiac, haematology and upper GI. CXH and SMH hospitals have busy admissions wards, medicine for elderly, respiratory and critical care units. In addition CXH specialises in oncology/neurosciences; SMH in major trauma/ vascular surgery.
You will contribute to multidisciplinary working, further developing your clinical skills and participating in service development and training others. Staff are actively encouraged and supported to participate in CPD activities and audit and research. In addition, the post-holder will provide support/supervision for rehab assistants as well as students on placement.
We hold weekly videofluoroscopy clinics and provide a FEES service across all hospital sites. You will be supported in the development of your skills in these areas in line with your learning needs.

- To provide a specialist SLT service to adult inpatients with disorders of communication and/or swallowing as part of the Adult Acute SLT team based across the 3 acute hospital sites, Charing Cross (CXH), St Mary’s (SMH) and Hammersmith (HH). This service is provided to patients within the specialisms of acute admissions, medicine for the elderly, respiratory medicine, neurosciences, trauma, haematology and oncology, renal, surgery (including cardiac, cardiothoracic and upper GI) and critical care, as well as within the Hyper-acute and Acute Stroke Units.
- The post-holder will receive regular support and supervision from a Band 7 within the relevant team. They will continue to gain wider clinical experience and expertise through clinical support and will be able to make independent clinical decisions concerning caseload management, as well as participating in service, team and MDT developments. We hold weekly videofluoroscopy clinics and provide a FEES service, therefore support will be provided for the development of the post-holder’s skills in line with their learning needs and service priorities. The department supports student placements, and delivers both rolling programmes and bespoke training and education to a range of professionals, which the post-holder will contribute to.

- Specialist level of clinical skills and knowledge relevant to the management of adults with swallowing and communication disorders in the acute hospital setting; underpinned by current models of best practice.
- Ability to negotiate with client/carer and medical/AHP teams around individual case management, prioritisation and clinical risk management
- Ability to seek guidance when faced with a situation beyond clinical experience
- Able to manage the emotional consequences of working with distressing conditions and emotionally demanding patients/carers
- Good organisation and time management skills
