Main duties of the job

We are looking for a hard working and self motivated Phlebotomist to join our busy Lymington hospital Phlebotomy team.
This service is managed and run by our Pathology Phlebotomy team at UHS.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Lymington New Forest Hospital is a community hospital located on the outskirts of Lymington at the edge of the New forest.
 
No previous experience necessary, full training will be provided to the successful candidate.
 
This can be a very busy department, during peak times we can see approximately one patient every 6 minutes.
 
The successful applicant will be working in the UHS Pathology Outpatient's department at Lymington Hospital.
The working hours for the service are from 07:15 to 17:00 Monday to Friday as per rota.
The applicant will also be part of the Saturday rota for Romsey Hospital which is currently approximately a 1 in 6 commitment.
You must be self-motivated, possess good interpersonal skills and enjoy the challenge offered by a dynamic, progressive department.
The successful applicant will be required to travel to the University Hospitals Southampton for Mandatory and Statutory training as required including practical Phlebotomy training with the clinical skills team.

To receive all patients in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner and uphold the confidentiality, dignity and best customer care practice for all patients/clients at all times.
To identify the correct patient against the blood request form and collect and accurately label blood samples from all patients according to Pathology Standard Operating Procedures (local policies).
To liaise with ward staff regarding request/patient condition.
To prioritise work according to fasting/urgent requests to ensure a prompt service and to deliver all samples.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to learn new skills. Ability to work as part of a team but also having the ability to work on their own
  • Ability to cope with work pressures when working in high care areas when having difficulty in collecting blood sample from patients
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary environment
  • Ability to complete all training packages including Venesection and cannulation course and ANTT course within 2 months.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in providing healthcare
  • Experience in hospital IT systems
  • Experience in Venesection in an acute setting
  • Experience preferred but not essential, as full in house training given
  • NVQ3, or willing to undertake NVQ training
  • Basic Life Support training
  • Previous clinical experience in a hospital setting
