Main duties of the job

Due to secondment of the current post holder, we are recruiting to a fixed term part time Band 7 role as team lead for the medicine and neurosciences dietetic team. The post holder will line manage a team of dietitians working across medicine, medicine for older people and neurosciences including providing supervision, conducting appraisals, authorising leave and organising cover and managing attendance. The successful candidate will hold a clinical caseload specialising in neurosciences. 

The medicine and neurosciences dietetic team is one of 7 teams that make of the acute adult dietetic service at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). You will work closely with the other team lead dietitians and the Lead Adult Dietitian to plan acute dietetic services across the Trust. The acute adult dietetic team at UHS is a busy, hardworking team known for its friendliness, support and development opportunities.

UHS is a leading teaching hospital, hosting a wide range of specialist tertiary services and a nutrition biomedical research centre. The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working across the range of specialties, providing both acute and community services.

Opportunities for training in leadership development will be supported as part of this role. You will report to the Lead Adult Dietitian who will provide supervision and mentorship.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO

You will:
•    Be responsible for the day to day operational management of dietitians working across acute and specialist medicine, medicine for older people and neurosciences, providing supervision and support for junior staff and ensuring adequate cover is in place during periods of staff absence.
•    Complete appraisals for designated staff.
•    Attend regular meetings with the other team leads and managers.
•    Be responsible for recruitment and selection of junior staff as vacancies arise.
•    Lead on assigned projects within speciality areas.
•    Provide a clinical dietetic service to patients with neurological conditions.
•    Work closely with MDT colleagues in the planning and delivery of clinical services and initiatives.
•    Represent dietetics at relevant meetings.
•    Lead service developments, audits and specific projects.
•    Provide training to ward staff and MDT colleagues.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for an HCPC registered dietitian with significant clinical experience. You must have experience in managing complex nutrition support patients. The successful post holder will have some experience of providing supervision or mentorship to junior staff although training will be provided to further develop leadership skills if required. You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathic nature.  You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an MDT as a highly specialist dietitian, and have the confidence to present and discuss your professional opinion with colleagues.  You should be able to demonstrate good organisational and caseload managements skills and be able to assist junior staff with prioritisation and time management. An understanding of service development would be helpful but not essential.
Our service operates Monday to Friday. The working days of the week for this role can be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Masters level qualification or equivalent experience
  • HCPC (Health and Care professions Council) registered dietitian (RD)
  • Evidence of post-graduate training in relevant speciality
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience and involvement with training
  • Evidence of extensive dietetic knowledge and highly specialist expertise in relevant specialist area with recent experience demonstrating this
  • Ability to carry out physical anthropometric measurements and assess nutritional status
  • Demonstration of understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service delivery
Desirable criteria
  • Member of British Dietetic Association (BDA) and relevant specialist groups
  • Experience of leading or co-ordinating audit or research work.
  • Clinical supervisory skills training
