Applications are invited for a FTSA (Lower) in Cardiothoracic Surgery based at the University Hospital of Wales. Post available to start in April 2025 until August 2025.
The post is a 4 month contract.
The post provides an excellent opportunity for those wishing to gain exposure to or develop their early experience in the challenging but hugely rewarding field of cardiothoracic surgery.
Main duties of the job
Duties of the post include clinical management of cardiothoracic surgical patients in the ward, theatre, cardiac ITU, and outpatient environments.
Successful applicants will be supported within the department by nurse practitioners, middle grade fellows and Specialist Registrars. While these posts will not be recognised for postgraduate training, they will take place in a teaching environment with operative exposure, supported by weekly local teaching, monthly regional programme, wet labs and ward-based development.
These posts are not suitable for those at an advanced level or those who have completed training in Cardiothoracic surgery.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Current GMC certificate with a licence to practise
Desirable criteria
- Intercalated Degree
- MRCS or part I
- MSc or MD
- Academic Excellence (Prizes, merits, distinctions etc.,)
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Guidance Score Surgical training at Foundation or Core training level.
- Cardiothoracic experience
Desirable criteria
- Surgical experience at Core training level
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE , ABILITIES
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
- Up to date with current medical practices
- Validated logbook of surgical experience to date
Desirable criteria
- Audit
- Teaching
- Attendance at relevant courses, eg. ATLS, CCrISP, Basic Surgical Skills, or equivalent.
ATTITUDE, APTITUDES, PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

- Aptitude for practical skills, eg. Hand-eye coordination, dexterity, visio-spatial awareness
- Motivated and efficient
- Capacity to communicate effectively & sensitively with others. Able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand

- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Capacity to operate effectively 2 under pressure & remain objective in highly emotive/pressurised situations.
- Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent & important demands and follow instructions
- Understands importance & impact of information systems.
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
