Job overview

We have a full-time, fully funded post CCT fellowship available in IBD or Nutrition at Barts Health, Royal London Hospital from September 2025. This will be based mainly at Royal London Hospital with some endoscopy activity at Mile End Hospital.

The post would suit a recently qualified gastroenterologist or senior trainee, seeking to advance their skills in a welcoming environment. The program aims to complement existing gastroenterology services and offer advanced training in IBD / Nutrition. Candidates with an interest in IBD and/or nutrition are invited to apply as the focus of the post can be changed depending on the exact interest of the candidate. The fellowship duration is 12 months.

Applicants should be at the end of their specialist training and should be JAG accredited for diagnostic OGD, colonoscopy and polypectomy, with audit data satisfying standard JAG auditable outcomes.

 

Main duties of the job

Have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council.  Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defense organisations 
Share in the cohesive, professional and patient centred approach of the existing department
Maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Integrate within, motivate and provide professional lead in MDT team
Liaise, communicate and co-operate with the Lead Clinicians, Managers and relevant colleagues

A wide experience in both outpatient and inpatient general gastroenterology and general medicine
Experience and training in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy
Membership of the Royal College of Physicians
Experience and interest in teaching
An appreciation and understanding of the role of management in the modern NHS
Evidence of engaging with clinical governance including audit
Excellent communication and leadership skills

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The fellowship is designed to allow the development of advanced skills in managing complex IBD / nutrition with the appropriate support. The program offers a balance of clinical practice (6 sessions/week) and academic activities (4 sessions/week). The fellow will receive tertiary-level training in all aspects of complex IBD and IBD endoscopy, with participation in specialist IBD clinics: young adult, pregnancy and adult. There will be 2 general clinics and 2 general endoscopy lists per week. As with all senior fellows and consultants in the Royal London Hospital, one of the endoscopy sessions is flexible and may need to be worked on a Saturday. The academic sessions are dedicated to research, (including a personal project), clinical trials teaching, and administration. Active participation in at least one research and one audit project is expected. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to attend MDTs with radiology and surgery. The post holder will participate in the Out-of-hours consultant bleed rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • JAG certification in gastroscopy
  • Provisional JAG certification in colonoscopy
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Research Degree
  • CCT in Gastroenterology or equivalent
  • JAG certification in colonoscopy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in Gastroenterology clinics and endoscopy
  • Experience in managing IBD inpatients
  • Experience in managing IBD outpatients

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Detailed knowledge of Gastroenterology and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team clinical and management
  • Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively with GPs and other professionals in hospital and community
  • Diagnostic and upper and lower GI endoscopy with evidence of KPIs
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to manage staff and resources effectively
  • Independent in Intestinal Ultrasound
