Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) for a suitably qualified Clinical Scientist to join our UKAS accredited department and contribute to the provision of the expanding Genomics service in Wessex based at the Southampton Laboratory.
WGLS is part of the Central and South Genomics Laboratory Hub (GLH) Consortium, providing a comprehensive range of molecular investigations and complex interpretation for haemato-oncology, solid tumours, pharmacogenomics and rare disease in line with the National Genomics Test Directory. We currently operate a 2 site model, following the creation of a single Wessex Genomics service managed by Southampton, combining the Salisbury and Southampton genomics teams.
Candidates working towards Clinical Scientist HCPC registration will be considered for this post. If successful they will be appointed at a lower band and will progress to a Band 7 upon successfully completion of their HCPC registration.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The post holder will be able to analyse, interpret and report complex molecular investigations. The post holder will work closely with the senior Wessex Genomics team, other departments within the Pathology directorate and the various teams across the Wessex region and as part of the GLH. The post holder will play a role in delivering the strategic plan for UHS genomics as part of the national reconfiguration of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service. The successful candidate will take part in all aspects of the genomics service including the interpretation, verification and validation of NGS data. They will also support developments including the transfer of assays to NGS platforms, complex interpretation, active engagement in MDTs and opportunities for research developments.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated HCPC registered Clinical Scientist with experience and knowledge in genomics. The successful applicant will have demonstrated their ability to constructively work through periods of change and have experience of innovation through new technologies and processes. The post requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ongoing teamwork.
The laboratory supports the training of a variety of STP programmes and is a training centre for STP trainees in Cancer Genomics.
Candidates currently working towards HCPC registration will be considered for this role. . If successful they will be paid at a lower band and then progress to a band 7 upon obtaining HCPC registration.

Qualifications / training required
Essential criteria
- First class or upper second class honours degree in relevant science subject
- MSc or equivalent in relevant subject
Desirable criteria
- PhD or equivalent in relevant subject
- Registered Clinical Scientist with the HCPC or working towards State Registration
- Evidence of CPD with the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential criteria
- Practical experience in molecular genetics or genome-based diagnostics
- Knowledge and experience necessary to participate in the provision and development of a molecular diagnostic clinical service
- Computing skills including the use of word-processing, spreadsheet and database software
Desirable criteria
- Experience in bioinformatics including analysis of DNA sequence data
- Experience in computer programming
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of clinical service provision in a range of sub-specialities
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Aptitudes and skills required
Essential criteria
- Laboratory practical and problem-solving skills necessary to trouble-shoot and develop methods, and carry out research projects and audits
- Able to keep abreast of current understanding of general aspects and develop more specialist knowledge in the discipline
- Demonstrated capability to plan over short, medium and long-term timeframes and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly
- Ability to prioritise own work effectively and to direct the activities of others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent keyboard skills
