Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced senior nurse, allied health professional or healthcare scientist to join University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) as divisional head of nursing and professions (DHN/P) in Division D.
As a senior leader within Division D and the trust, you will work to assure the provision of safe, effective and evidence based care as the divisional, professional and clinical lead for all nurses and healthcare professions. About the Division
Our Specialist Services and Major Trauma Centre form Division D and consist of Cardiovascular & Thoracic, Trauma and Orthopaedics, the Wessex Neurological Centre & Neurosciences Care group and Radiology. The Cardiovascular & Thoracic, Trauma and Orthopaedics and Neurosciences Care Groups are regional centres that provide specialist care and treatment to a population of approximately 3 million people. The Radiology care group provides Trust wide diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology services. As one of the largest radiology services in the country we undertake over 320,000 examinations a year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
WHAT YOU’LL DO
As DHN/P you will be a highly visible presence accountable to the director of nursing. You’ll work to ensure the provision of high quality, evidence based, responsive services that hold the needs of the patient at the centre of care delivery.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Provision of professional and managerial leadership across the Division, focusing on Governance, Patient Safety, Safeguarding and Clinical Standards.
• Leading on developments and innovation in nursing and practice standards linking with local and national agencies
• Being a highly visible presence, ensuring the provision of high quality, evidence based, responsive service which holds the needs of the patient at the centre of care delivery.
• Accountability for the direct delivery of high quality nursing care and continual review of standards in clinical practice working within the financial framework
• Leading on developing clinical and practice standards using Clinical Governance frameworks, patient feedback and audit.
• Divisional lead for specific quality agendas
• Leading corporate projects as agreed by the director of nursing.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You will be an inspiring and motivated nurse, AHP or HCS leader, who’s committed to the consistent delivery of high standards of compassionate care, with the ability to challenge and influence practice. You will have a proven track record putting safety, quality and patient experience at the heart of practice. You will have demonstrable experience of leading nursing and clinical services, with experience of leading initiatives across an organisation. As a senior leader within the organisation you will also need to demonstrate the following skills:
• budget management
• formal and informal teaching
• staff and resource management
• project management and delivery

Interview Information
Successful applicants will be invited to a remote stakeholder session held over MS Teams. This is planned for Friday 7th February 2025. A second round interview will be held on-site and will occur on Monday 10th of February 2025.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse or Registered Health Care Professional/ Scientist.
- Evidence of recent further professional development (MBA/MSc or equivalent)
- Evidence of management/ leadership development.
- Highly developed specialist knowledge acquired through significant demonstrable experience in midwifery, nursing leadership and management
- A proved track record of operational service management at senior level in an acute hospital environment including staff management, financial management and change management Leading change through empowering people and holding them to account.
- Evidence of problem solving decision making, implementing and sustaining a change in clinical practice across a complex division or organisation
- Experience at analysing complex data and/or national guidance and being able to interpret and apply it locally
- Sound understanding of current NHS agenda challenges and developments
- Evidence of effective leadership skills, team building skills and the ability to lead develop and reassure in achieving change
- Evidence of analysing complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them
Desirable criteria
- Management and leadership qualification
- Previous strategic experience
