An exciting opportunity has arisen within D Neuro at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), for a band 6 ward sister/charge nurse. 

D Neuro is a 27-bed male acute neurosurgery and neurological ward. We also have admission / step-down beds for patients who are transferred from Neuro HDU. These beds accommodate all acute neurosurgical conditions, including subarachnoid haemorrhage and head injuries.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the management of the ward/unit over 24 hours, ensuring high standards of care are maintained and available resources are utilised effectively.

Assisting in the day-to-day management and organisation of the unit as required, demonstrating clinical expertise, and acting as a role model within the Neurosciences setting.

We are looking for a strong leader who is highly motivated with excellent communication skills. The Sister/Charge Nurse role requires a close working relationship with the multi-professional team to ensure that evidence-based quality care is delivered with compassion to every patient.

You will be required to have high clinical standards with a passion for making a difference for patients and staff alike. It is essential that you are good at promoting cooperation, building teams, and developing people for the future, as well as focusing on your professional growth.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
  • Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities
  • Commitment to continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in handling adverse events and complaints
  • Appraisal skills
