We are seeking a dynamic Consultant Psychiatrist for our outstanding, innovative community mental health service, based at Bentley House, Harrow.

As a new consultant in the team you will be offered a place on the Management and Leadership Course run by the Trust, in conjunction with Imperial College. The Trust also has a partnership with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), giving you the opportunity to gain knowledge in improvement science and enhance your skills and confidence to understand healthcare systems and successfully implement change. The successful applicants will be eligible to apply for relocation support in line with the Trust’s Removal Expenses Policy.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining the CCT and Approved Clinician Status.

The post is based in Bentley House, Harrow and there is office space and administration support for this post.  There is a large faculty of consultants across  adult mental health and a comprehensive program of professional development to which the successful candidate will have access. A personal budget for CPD is allocated to each consultant annually. There is also access to apply for CEA awards.

Together with the service manager, the post-holder will provide overall clinical leadership for multidisciplinary team as well as direct clinical assessments, consultations, risk assessments and care plans. 

You will be highly motivated and passionate about delivering high quality care and will adopt a pragmatic leadership style ensuring collaborative working both at a clinical and an operational level. The post-holder will be expected to lead on, in partnership with the modern matron, quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation projects and will be encouraged to lead on research. 

Other duties include:

•    Clinical supervision of trainees and specialty doctors working with the team
•    Responsible Clinician duties
•    Regular clinical liaison with acute mental health teams
•    Regular liaison with families and carers
•    Regular liaison with other stakeholders as appropriate eg Mental Health Act Law, Social Care, Advocacy,

Harrow Community Mental Health Service is a multidisciplinary and community-based service which aims to provide evidence based, safe and effective assessment and treatment service. The service consists of a triage team and one mental health hub where 4 consultants are aligned to separate PCNs. There is integrated psychology, psychotherapy and occupational health provision within the service. 

The service is part of an integrated mental service in Harrow. Close to Bentley, The Northwick Park Mental Health Unit has an ECT suite, two adult in-patients’ wards, the home treatment team, the psychiatric liaison service, Community Perinatal Service Community Learning Disability Service and Harrow management team. 

In line with the NHS 10-year long term plan, CNWL Harrow has embedding Open Dialogue and a Trauma Informed Approach across our mental health services. All adult staff already receive training and supervision in this approach.

Clinical duties of post holder 
•    Provide senior clinical advice and support to the daily triage, MDT and other regular clinical team meetings. 
•    Ensure that all referrals are triaged daily and responded to in a timely way
•    Assessment of new patients and clinical supervision of assessments carried out by other team members.
•    Review complex needs patients to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place
•    Mental Health Act related-work
•    Domiciliary visits to provide assessment and treatment services as a member of the CMHT
•    Domiciliary assessments in response to emergencies
•    Occasional psychiatric assessments of residents who may be in crisis in another borough.
•    Ensure that physical health needs are addressed
•    Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow.
•    Develop good working relationships with local GPs and other providers 
•    Provide mental health advice and support to GPs and primary care clinicians by surgery visits and other means, to assist patient management in the primary care setting
•    Close liaison with the wards to facilitate admission and discharge planning.
•    Liaison with CRHTT, Psychiatric Liaison Services, AMHP services and Forensic Services in the borough.
•    Develop working relationships with local voluntary sector services in order to support and promote recovery 
•    Following the cross-cover protocol that has been agreed with another team or colleague which will make sure appropriate cover is in place during absences. 

Leadership responsibilities: 
•    Leadership role in the quality agenda: identifying areas for improvement and active engagement with QI 
•    Meet regularly with the team and local service managers to ensure quality, finance and performance targets are met 
•    Support recruitment and ensure optimal retention of team members
•    Line management and clinical supervision of junior and higher trainees and specialty doctors in the team
•    Teaching of medical students
•    Engage in service developments 
•    Actively link and develop a relationship with the Primary Care Network(s) you are affiliated to, to respond to their developing needs and  support the move towards more integrated care.

  • • Primary medical degree.
  • • Full Registration with the GMC and inclusion on Specialist Register (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date).
  • • Either have British Citizenship or hold the required work permit visa to be able to work full time in the UK

  • • Completed minimum of one years’ full-time training in an approved psychiatric training scheme.
  • • Experience of managing patients with acute, severe and enduring mental illness in a community setting

  • • Experience in risk assessment and management in clinical settings
