UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Specific to this role we are open to discussing flexibility in the hours that you work. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- This is a vacancy for full time or part time band 7 clinical pharmacists to work with specialist pharmacists in all three areas
- The chance to work in the tertiary services of CV&T and neurosciences and a level 1 trauma unit
- 1 in 5 late nights until 7pm
- 1 in 6 weekend days
- All staff are required to contribute to extended hours, weekends & bank holidays as part of core hours. This includes general dispensary duties such as dispensing prescriptions and clinical pharmacy duties.

Your Responsibilities
What you’ll do
1. To provide a clinical pharmacy service to Specialist Services at UHS which encompasses Cardiovascular & Thoracics, Trauma & Orthopaedics and Neurosciences, with the opportunity to specialise and develop the service to your chosen speciality.
2. To support the Senior Care Group Pharmacist in each area in the provision of a specialist pharmacy service.
3. There will be opportunities to undertake project work
4. As a band 7 pharmacist you will have the opportunity to supervise, teach and mentor rotational band 6 and trainee pharmacists within each care group.
5. The rotations available are:

Cardiovascular & Thoracics
Working as part of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Care Group pharmacy team you will gain experience in a variety of areas as part of the Wessex Cardiac Unit which is a tertiary centre for cardiac disease. This includes cardiology, cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery, and congenital heart disease. You will quickly develop specialist knowledge in all areas of cardiac disease in a busy and forward-thinking speciality.

Trauma & Orthopaedics
You will work closely with the trauma, elective and orthogeriatric medical teams to provide pharmaceutical care to orthopaedic patients. Your role will involve liaising with the medical teams to ensure accurate medicines reconciliation and prescribing during admission, and working together with the orthopaedic team to proactively prepare discharge prescriptions to enable patient flow from theatre, the emergency department and critical care.

Neurosciences
UHS is also a tertiary referral centre for neurosciences patients and provides dedicated services to neurology, neuropsychology, neurophysiology and neurosurgery. Again, you will work as part of the neurosciences pharmacy team and quickly develop specialist knowledge in this area.

If you have the enthusiasm and are committed to team working with good communication skills, we can provide additional training and development to support you. We have a strong commitment to developing pharmacist independent prescribers (over 50% of the clinical pharmacy team are already independent prescribers). We also have five Consultant Pharmacists working at UHS who are excellent role models. A candidate who is already a prescriber or has an interest in becoming an independent prescriber would be an advantage also.

As a department we have a strong commitment to continuing professional development and training. The post-holder will have the opportunity to undertake further study in either clinical or management qualifications. You will be supported by an established Medicines Management Service, a team of specialist pharmacists and an experienced Lead Care Group Pharmacist in each area.

What we’re looking for:
We are searching for flexible individuals that are responsive to change and constant improvement, and are able to fulfil the job description. If you have any further questions please feel free to get in touch.
We are advertising both a band 7 and a band 6-to-7 progressive position.

Our preferred candidate would be someone who is able to work immediately at band 7 level. Therefore if we have an applicant who is appointable to the role, they will be offered the position. However if we do not have a suitable band 7 applicant, then we will consider offering the post as a development opportunity to a pharmacist who fulfils the requirements of a band 6 pharmacist and is willing to work towards becoming a band 7 pharmacist.
