Milton Keynes University Hospital are holding a recruitment day in the New Year for Healthcare Assistants wanting to work within the Medicine division. We are looking for 25 motivated, organised and enthusiastic individuals, to join our friendly and supportive wards.

Good communication skills are required, and you should be able to work independently and as part of a wider team including Registered Nurses, Consultants, Ward Managers and Housekeepers.  Additionally, you must be understanding of accurate documentation within the workplace, be self-motivated, be wanting to improve patient lives and be caring at all times towards staff and their family members.

These are the wards we will be recruiting for within the Medicine division:

Ward 2A: Short-stay medical ward

Ward 3: Female Care of the Elderly

Ward 8: General ward for Diabetes & Endocrinology

Ward 15: Male respiratory ward

Ward 16: Female respiratory ward

Ward 17: Coronary Care Unit

Ward 18: Male – Care of the Elderly

Ward 19: General medical ward

Ward 22: General medical ward - Gastroenterology

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision of Registered staff, the role of the Senior Healthcare Assistant is to undertake delegated clinical care duties, assist the nursing team and support Healthcare Assistants in the delivery of safe effective care to the patient.

Additionally, as of 1st of November 2024, it has been approved Trust-wide that 90% of our Healthcare Assistants are no longer to be paid as a Band 2 but are now to be paid at Band 3. This is an excellent step forward for Milton Keynes University Hospital as we prove that we greatly appreciate and value the collaborative and patient-focused work from our Healthcare Assistants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·  Undertake/assist patients with personal care duties as needed including bathing, toileting, dressing and feeding. Ensure privacy and dignity is maintained.

·       Assess patient condition and wellbeing through clinical observations and test results, looking for signs of agitation or distress, reporting any concerns with patient condition to a senior member of staff, in accordance with the department’s escalation process.

·       Assist in the meeting of patient’s nutritional needs, ensuring patients who require assistance at mealtimes have a red tray.

·  Assist in skin and pressure area care. Under the supervision of registered nurses ensure patients are helped to move position to prevent discomfort and/ pressure damage.

·    Undertake clinical duties and record patient observations as requested by a registered professional, this could include taking blood pressure, blood glucose monitoring, basic wound dressing changes, undertaking venepuncture and removing cannulas, sutures and catheters.

·  To complete relevant documentation, including updating patient records with patient information such as fluid balance, nutrition, height and weight, as necessary.

  •    To assist in the induction of new staff within the department, demonstrating duties to new starters. Lead in setting an example to new starters to ensure safe and effective care.
  •       Support with day-to-day supervision of Healthcare Assistants within the department.

Essential criteria
  • GCSE level or Functional Skills in Maths & English or equivalent knowledge
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
  • CARE Certificate
  • Knowledge of personal care and activities of daily living
  • Awareness of importance of infection prevention & control
  • Understanding of the importance of safe working practices
  • Understanding of the role of a Healthcare Assistant
Desirable criteria
  • Studying Nursing or Midwifery or similar at university
