Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of the Adult Respiratory Physiology Team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS), supporting our expanding department at Royal South Hants (RSH).
Our respiratory department is rapidly expanding, and we are looking for 2 Respiratory Physiologist (Band 5) to join the team. As a service we offer testing to a wide cohort of patients (asthma, CF, COPD, ILD, BMT...) and work closely with other specialist areas, to offer a multidisciplinary team approach to our patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Applicants will hold a BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent with relevant clinical experience in respiratory physiology sciences. Newly qualified applicants or junior clinical physiologists enthusiastic about respiratory medicine are welcomed and must be eligible for voluntary registration with the RCCP or equivalent.
However, we will also consider taking on applications eligible to be appointed as Senior Assistant Respiratory Physiologist (Band 4). For such candidates, previous experience in lung function testing will be preferred, however not essential. The successful applicant will complete an internal work-based training programme, which includes in-house competencies and relevant external accreditations. This job role can be an opportunity to start a career within the respiratory physiology field!
This job role is a great opportunity to develop your clinical skills within the respiratory medicine field by testing of respiratory diagnostic tests, such as spirometry, lung volumes, gas transfer, FeNO and 6 walking test.
The successful applicants will have the ability to work flexibly, be proactive and enjoy working as part of a team. A keen eye for detail and accuracy is also required. Even though the post is predominantly based at Royal South Hants (RSH), you may be asked to cover other UHS sites (for example, Southampton General Hospital).

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- BSc in clinical physiology or equivalent with relevant experience within respiratory physiology sciences.
- Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology 1 and 2 (working towards)
- Currently working in the pulmonary Function area
- Able to undertake complex hand-eye coordination tasks and have the dexterity to use specialist diagnostic equipment.
- Able to relate information in a variety of forms to patients, relatives and carers.
- ARTP Professional Examination (Level 3) or willing to work towards it
- Eligible for or already registered with RCCP or equivalent
