Job overview

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is an international leader in cancer research and development and is one of the largest cancer treatment centres of its kind in Europe.

We are very pleased to offer this post doc opportunity for a fixed term basis to join our R&I division as a ANP/Nurse Fellow.

The purpose of the post is for a post-doctoral Nurse/ Allied Health Professional to lead and conduct research and integrate findings into practice and deliver the Trust’s plan to increase high quality patient-centred research.

The post-holder will be expected to conduct and engage in all aspects of research activity, implement routine monitoring of unmet needs into the teenage and young adult (TYA) Late effects service and collect pilot data required for completing competitive external funding applications.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the organisational values and behaviours and are able to role model and lead by example. You must be self-motivated and be able to motivate teams and groups, and lead through authenticity and compassion.

The post-holder will lead applications for research grants and fellowships to secure funding for further research. They will be responsible for delivering projects within specified time frames and disseminate research findings in conference presentations and writing high quality papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The post holder will develop strategic links with other Christie research groups and external organisations such as Manchester BRC, Universities and other health organisations and charities. The post holder will continue to develop the Christie’s capacity to develop a pipeline of research leaders to meet national ambitions.

The post holder will be responsible for the effective management of defined research associates within Christie Patient Centred Research and trainee researchers such as PhD supervision.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Planning and organisational duties:

  • Provide professional and management leadership to support the development of clinical research activity for defined staff.
  • Supports with the development and implementation of the R&I strategy and objectives.
  • Supports with the design and implementation of relevant strategies within the trust including the NIHR Nursing strategy, and Trust Nursing & AHP Strategy
  • Maintain responsibility for professional registration and practice through continuing personal development and undertaking annual appraisals.
  • Maintain ICH/GCP competence.
  • Oversee and ensure quality data management and data handling
  • Maintain personal standards of conduct and behaviour consistent with Trust and professional codes of conduct.
  • Maintain clinical competence through regular peer review of evidence based practice with medical consultant supervisor or by undertaking revalidation processes.
  • Liaise and collaborate with relevant organisations such as charitable partners, and other bodies such as MCRC, Tessa Jowell Foundation, and NIHR.
  • Be aware of the policies, procedures and philosophies of the Trust, understanding health and safety requirements and ensure that all duties and responsibilities are carried out within these guidelines.

Patient / service user related duties

  • Be an expert practitioner and clinical role model in the field of oncology nursing, with specific expertise in clinical research and the development of protocol defined follow-up care involving the patient management and monitoring of late effects.
  • Be an advocate and role model for developing and delivering care that is responsive to changing requirements, informed by an understanding of local population health needs, agencies and networks.
  • Use advanced clinical skills in the assessment and management of patients in collaboration with relevant clinical teams. This includes obtaining informed consent, history taking, systematic physical examination, requisition and interpretation of appropriate clinical investigations and formulation of clinical management plans.
  • Communicate highly complex and sensitive information to patients and their significant others, this may include results of scans or other investigations, management options and prognosis.
  • Liaise with the patient’s GP and recruit support from other relevant services as required to meet the needs of the patients.
  • Prepare accurate and concise records and reports, both verbal and written.
  • Contribute to clinical and research governance processes, including adverse incident reporting and the investigation and the management of complaints as appropriate.
  • Act on professional judgement about when to seek help, demonstrating critical reflection on own practice, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and openness to change.
  • Ensures patients and their families are treated with dignity and respect and information is conveyed to   them in a timely and understandable manner
  • Monitor the quality and timeliness of nursing care and service provision in accordance with relevant professional and local standards
  • Responsible for providing senior nursing advice across areas of the Trust as required, including participation in Duty Manager rota for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. 

 

Responsibilities for information resources

  • Can use a variety of clinical research related information systems including CWP, R-PEAK
  • Produce and utilize reports to manage team performance, including, but not limited to, HR, Financial, patient recruitment, and other KPI’s.
  • Ensure teams are involved with, and influences trust Digital strategies in relation to the requirement of the R&I division
  • Responsible for providing accurate and timely records on patient care and performance IT based systems.
  • Development of audits and analysis of working practices and trends to support improvements in performance in relation to quality and patient experience.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained.

 

Responsibilities for human resources

  • Contribute as appropriate to the development of nursing research within the Research and Innovation Division and to research to build and develop the TYA Late Effects service.
  • Be highly visible in the TYA and brain tumour clinical areas, engaging with all disciplines.
  • Provide professional, clinical and academic leadership to other nurses/AHPs and other professionals as appropriate within the scope of the role.
  • Lead on clinical audit and service evaluation, and contribute to clinical service re-design including evaluation of own practice and demonstrate the impact of research on service function and effectiveness, (e.g use research findings to develop and integrate policies and procedures for effective evidence-based patient centred service delivery).
  • Take a proactive role in shaping the development of service improvement, managing change in conjunction with key stakeholders as appropriate
  • Contribute to local, regional and national clinical networks including specialty groups and key stakeholders.
  • Actively and independently search out research funding opportunities and apply for these funds.
  • Act as an ambassador of the nursing profession, ensure self and others practice to the highest professional standards.
  • Responsible for the informal and formal appraisal of direct line report staff and for ensuring that they are trained, supported and developed accordingly.
  • Ensure that all direct line report staff have clear and agreed performance objectives that support the delivery of the Directorate and the wider Divisional and Trust objectives
  • Participate in training and development activities that are relevant to the job role.
  • Work with Trust R&I department and research staff to ensure regulatory and governance frameworks are adhered to.
  • Participates with service/specialty teams in the development of policy, processes and business plans at Directorate/Service level.
  • Represent and provide nursing expertise and advice to business and operational discussions, meetings and forums.
  • Responsible for recognising service requirements and ensuring these are communicated to the Directorate/Specialty teams and Divisional Associate Chief Nurse.
  • Ensuring that all staff practice in accordance with statutory and corporate policies; including those specific to patient safety.
  • To be aware of, comment on and/or actively participate in changes on policies, procedures or service developments.
  • To embrace and support line management and the department in making service improvements effective within the workplace

 

Responsibility for financial resources

  • Develop business plans to secure funding for the provision of resources as required
  • Ensure appropriate use of trust funds in line with SFI’s.
  • Ensure oversight and active management of aged debt within teams.
  • Ensure safe and efficient use of equipment, resources and consumables always.
  • Within sphere of responsibility ensure self and line-report staff manage pay and non-pay resources efficiently and effectively, and in accordance with corporate standards, procedures, policies and objectives.  Include formulating and delivering remedial action plans where adverse variances arise.

 

Research

  • The post holder will lead and develop protocol ideas through liaison with clinical professionals across the Trust and University partners.
  • Work towards transition from Co-investigator to Principle Investigator in the design and conduct of primary research and systematic reviews where appropriate. 1.03 Support the strategic aims of Christie Clinical Academic Pathway (CCAP), Christie Patient Centred Research (CPCR), and wider Trust/MCRC strategy as a collaborator, working with other clinical and academic researchers to identify and participate in research opportunities, supported by the lead investigator of the CPCR research team.
  • Facilitate collaborative links between clinical practice and research through proactive engagement, networking and close working relationships with academics, clinical and charitable partners and other researchers, working towards developing strategic approaches to research studies and in collaborations over joint proposals.
  • Undertake own post-doctoral research: manage the research and ethics application process through national systems; manage the day to day running of the project; convene and chair meetings and ensure the research meets the objectives and deadlines.
  • Disseminate best practice/research findings and quality improvement projects through appropriate media. For example, via local team and/or national/international presentations and peer reviewed publications
  • Actively identify potential need for further research to strengthen evidence for best practice. This may involve acting as an educator, leader, innovator and contributor to research activity and/or applying for research funding.
  • Be responsible for ensuring patient safety issues are paramount in developing and delivering research.
  • Conduct the collection of sensitive research data optimising accuracy of data.  Manage highly sensitive issues and provide emotional support to participants when discussing difficult and upsetting issues
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained in line with research protocols and GCP. Lead in making clinical decisions about management of sensitive patient disclosures during research interviews.

Essential criteria
  • Award of PhD or Professional Doctorate in related subject.
  • Registered Nurse/ AHP
  • Current GCP certificate

Experience

  • Relevant post registration experience in AYA oncology nursing.
  • Evidence of clinical leadership.
  • Evidence of negotiation/ conflict management skills.
  • Significant experience of managing a variety of medical problems, for example: oncology, haematology, acute oncology.

  • Experience of using quantitative and qualitative research methods, data management and analysis.
