An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a small specialist team in the Dental Radiology Department, within the Newcastle Dental Hospital. You will be an enthusiastic autonomous Radiographer wishing to extend their skills and expertise whilst working in a team-based environment. The role has a high teaching commitment to a range of students. Therefore, this post will suit individuals that enjoy teaching and are confident presenting technical information to both students and colleagues. 

You will be responsible for supporting the Superintendent Radiographer in ensuring that our service users’ needs are met through the delivery of high-quality care. 

Experience of Dental Radiography would be advantageous but not essential as training will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for a current Band 5 Radiographer looking for promotion to a Senior Specialist Radiographer, as well as substantive Band 6 Radiographers looking for a new challenge. 

Applicants must hold a degree level or equivalent qualification in Diagnostic Radiography be HCPC registered and have a working knowledge of NHS Policies and Procedures.

Main duties of the job

You will offer a person-centred approach to their independence and well-being and provide a high standard of diagnostic imaging to a wide range of patients, many who will be distressed, emotional and anxious, including dental phobic patients daily. Therefore, you will need to gain their confidence and be able to put them at ease very quickly, to achieve the required high quality diagnostic radiographs. 

The main duties will include teaching undergraduate dental and therapy students, dental nurses and BSc Radiography students in the technical application of intra-oral and panoramic radiography. You will also perform Cone Bean CT, cephalometric radiography and assist the Oral Maxillofacial Consultant Radiologist with ultrasound and sialography. 

The post hold will be encouraged to take on additional responsibilities, including Quality Assurance, Reject Analysis, audits and teaching seminars. They will also be an element of line management responsibility.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be part of a team delivering a high quality efficient and effective radiographic service, to make an informed decision on the diagnostic images required and demonstrate a professional, caring and responsible approach to patients. 


To take an active part in the teaching of dental radiography to all undergraduate dental students as this is a mandatory part of their BDS course. To also participate in the teaching of other disciplines in dental radiography.


The post holder will be encouraged to take on additional responsibilities.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.
