Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) wishes to appoint 1 Permanent Consultant and 1 Locum Consultant in Stroke Medicine, either full or part time.  You will join a team of seven stroke consultants and four neurologists on an 8am-8pm daily service. UHS is a large teaching hospital serving 1.3 million people in Southampton and south Hampshire and regional services for 3.5 million in central southern England. It is a major centre for teaching and research, hosting the University of Southampton, Medical Research Council and Welcome Trust.

We are an NIHR Hyperacute Research Centre with active studies in thrombectomy, thrombolysis, and trials in secondary prevention. Teaching opportunities include departmental, undergraduate, and postgraduate activities, and further afield across the region. Technological quality improvement projects include prehospital stroke video triage, and a pathway for wearables for post stroke atrial fibrillation. Multidisciplinary meetings consist of weekly stroke neuroradiology and medical education, monthly mortality and morbidity and quarterly thrombolysis and thrombectomy sessions. Recent SSNAP performance data have been good, scoring highly for the quality of delivery of care. In 2022 we were the 6th most active thrombectomy UK centre and have 5 interventional neuroradiologists, and we aim to expand to provide 24/7 cover.

All non-clinical roles may involve a mixture of on site and remote working, Specific details and flexible working options can be discussed as part of the interview process. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

UHS is a Comprehensive Stroke Centre (CSC) providing tertiary stroke services. Patients are admitted to the 13 bed Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) with neuroradiology, surgery and intensive care units close by. On-going in-patient care is provided on ward F8, a 28-bed stroke unit.
