Job overview

To be a professional role model, leading and co-ordinating PICU and Acute Paediatric education and/or practice development in highly contagious and potentially life-threatening diseases.

To understand the training and education needs of staff at SMH PICU and the Acute Paediatric Wards who come into contact with such diseases.

To provide expert evidence based clinical bedside teaching and immersive simulated preparedness exercises to all levels of nursing allied health and medical staff.

Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients /clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with the national protocols.

At all times ensure that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.

To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for staff on PICU who nurses such patients. 

Act as a key link with other members of the in-service education and/or practice development team(s) and external education institutions as required.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialist HCID trainining and development for childrens nurses
Work with Specialist PICU/Paediatric Matrons to provide safe and efficient pathways for children and families with HCID.

Work with all Specialist Consultants and Commissioners to provide advisory support within the HCID Network.

Control and govern the internal Policies and SOPs related to HCID
Work with the Emergency Response Team within Imperial and HCID Network to insitute efficient care in transport, supplies and estates for children and families with HCID

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN Child/RN Adult
  • BSc (Hons)/MSc/ Equivalent
  • Post Registration/ Experience in PICU/HDU/Infectious Disease Course
  • PILS/APLS/EPALS or Equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or willingness to undertake
  • Modules in Advanced Assessment Skills
  • Post Grad Diploma/Certificate in Infections Disease
  • Qualification in Education or Relevant Experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Min 2 years at Band 6 level
  • Worked in an environment where Infectious Disease was a cohort of patients
  • Can demonstrate management and leadership in an acute setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at Band 7 level
  • Has managed a team or project
  • Working experience in HCID
  • Experience of MDT teaching

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates expert skills. Up to date knowledge of current paediatric/adult nursing practices in infectious disease
  • Evidence of initiating development in clinical practice
  • Demonstrates excellent MDT communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and that of the team
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to lead evidence and research based activities
  • Experience of conducting audit
  • Membership of professional groups
  • Experience of spreadsheet software
