An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Psychologist with experience in mental health to further develop their skills and knowledge in the specialist area of the East Berkshire Psychological Medicine. As a highly specialist clinical or counselling psychologist, the post holder will deliver a specialist psychological service to patients and be a key member of the multidisciplinary team providing expertise in psychologically based care and treatment pathways. 

The post holder will have the ability to work autonomously within professional and local guidelines and policies, to contribute to the maintenance and development of high quality, safe and effective services and to utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.

Main duties of the job

  • You will operate within MDT and will provide highly developed expert psychological clinical advice on the evidence-based approach for patients
  • You will provide advice on assessment; formulation and treatment to MDT and where appropriate provide ongoing practical advice and support through supervision, case review and joint assessment or intervention
  • You will lead on psychological formulation; provide specialist teaching and supervision as required within the team
  • You will work in collaboration with other psychologists/assistant psychologists in the provision of services to people who need mental health support
  • You may operate as the Lead Professional and be responsible for expert psychological assessment, case formulation and treatment for a designated number of patients. 
  • You as Lead Professional will be responsible for the liaison and coordination of care delivered by the wider MDT and the setting of goals and review in collaboration with the patient and significant others
  • You will be responsible for making recommendations to the MDT on additional assessments or interventions and skills required from the multidisciplinary team to deliver the plan of care and expected health/social outcomes which are evidenced based and lead to recovery and minimise risk
  • As an experienced MH practitioner, you will direct and supervise junior staff and resources within their area of responsibility and take an active participation in clinical quality assurance and learning programmes

Person specification

Education/Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Post graduate doctoral qualification in clinical or counselling psychology (or equivalent)
  • Clinical supervision training for psychology trainees where appropriate
  • Registered and accredited with Health Professional Council (HCPC)
  • Full British Psychology Society membership of clinical/counselling division and chartered clinical or counselling

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidenced post qualification training and expert knowledge in areas of specialism and the ability to use knowledge when interacting on health and social care subjects

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Will usually have at least two years demonstrable post-qualification experience and interest of working in multidisciplinary teams / multi-agency environment as well as experience of teaching / training of health care professionals
  • Experiencing of managing highly complex situations concerning safeguarding, risk management, complaints and investigations
  • Experience of working with complex caseloads
  • Experience of working effectively with a wide variety of patient groups, across the whole life course and with service users with cases of a high degree of complexity
  • Experience of carrying out clinical audit and applying the findings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to manage difficult situations with service users that have complex mental health conditions and challenging behaviours.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage, support and lead patients, clinicians and other stakeholder groups in change, development and improvement
  • Able to empathise, be supportive and sensitive to the needs of others as well as being able to cope with highly distressing circumstances
  • Ability to comfortably and confidently cope well under pressure, with excellent time management skills and an ability to respond constructively to challenge or resistance.
  • Quick to work through and resolve issues and competing demands
  • Knowledge and understanding of service evaluation and implementing change from a national and local health or social care change agenda that impacts across services and professions
  • Exceptional IT skills and the ability to navigate around various systems and software packages (such as RiO, Outlook, databases, MS office and the internet)
