Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Occupational Therapist  to join our highly valued Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Emergency Department (ED) therapies team at University Hospital Southampton. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, reliable, and flexible senior therapist who can lead the team alongside existing senior members of the team.

The aims of this flexible and responsive service will be to provide prompt therapy assessments, implement frailty care pathways, and facilitate appropriate discharges across AMU and ED.
You will work as part of a team delivering a therapy service from 8am to 6pm across a 7-day service, including weekends and bank holidays.

You will work as part of a combined therapy services team delivering patient care across a 7-day service, including weekends and bank holidays, on a roster basis. 

This post is part of the wider Therapy services department. You will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 290wte Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for a B7 OT wishing to update their acute skills, or a for an experienced B6 who is looking to progress into a leadership role for the first time.The postholder will work in a friendly, supportive MDT environment with a team committed to improving patient care and experience. They will be expected to support the wider multi-disciplinary team across AMU and ED which consists of 90 beds in total. Patients present with a wide range of diagnoses and often have multiple pathologies and complex social situations. It is a fast-paced environment where effective communication, prioritisation, and teamwork are essential. Our focus is early assessment and complex discharge planning.


Essential skills/experience
•    Experience working in the acute hospital setting (ideally within Acute Medical Units or 
        Emergency Department)
•    Experience in completing comprehensive geriatric assessments.
•    Experience within a variety of acute areas e.g. Orthopaedics, Medicine, Elderly Care, Neuro
•    Understanding of complex equipment needs including managing pressure care. 
•    Experience working in a large multidisciplinary team and communicating effectively.
•    Experience in managing and supporting staff, rotas and other team management skills.
•    Evidence of leadership skills.
•    Knowledge of NHS systems.
•    Clear desire to work within UHS therapy services.
•    Clear desire to work in acute services.

Desirable skills/experience include:
•    Involvement in service developments and facilitating change
•    Knowledge of cognitive assessments appropriate to the acute setting
•    Evidence of providing teaching to wider MDT, therapy teams and students 

As part of this role, you will be expected to work across 7-days on a roster basis: working 8am to 6pm, including weekends and bank holidays.
