The Royal Surrey County Hospital is a Designated Hospital for Teenagers and Young Adults(TYA) with Cancer. To support the further growth and development of this innovative nurse led service, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced cancer nurse to undertake the role of Chemotherapy Sister - Teenagers and Young Adults.

The existing service for age 16-24 is now being expanded to care for those diagnosed with cancer up to the age of 30.

You will need to have a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience in cancer nursing at senior band 5 or band 6, a 1st Level Nursing degree and an accredited post registration chemotherapy qualification in this specialist area of nursing practice.

The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer and the Cancer Site Specific Nurse Specialists to continue to develop a high quality service to young people with cancer. You will work as part of the team to ensure the safe administration of chemotherapy and co-medications and to proactively manage any toxicities through this nurse led service. You will have a key role in the development and delivery of teaching programmes for staff.

Excellent communication skills will be needed to work across both professional and organisational boundaries in order to ensure co-ordinated patient care for these young people. You should also be confident and self-motivated utilising the benefit of your clinical knowledge and experience and be able to act as a resource to all levels of healthcare professionals and support staff.

To be a part of the Teenage and Young Adults(TYA) Cancer Services Team under the management of the TYA Clinical Nurse Specialist(CNS) administering cytotoxic chemotherapy, managing side effects and ensuring holistic and age appropriate care for patients age between 16-30 and their families/significant others.

Qualifications

  • 1st level degree
  • 20 credits oncology related qualification
  • Chemotherapy administration at Level 3
  • Teaching qualification, ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Mentorship qualification

Knowledge and Skills

  • Can demonstrate clinical credibility
  • At least 1 year working as a Band 6 chemotherapy nurse or 2-3 years as a senior Band 5 chemotherapy nurse
  • Evidence of advanced skills in practice i.e. iv additives, cannulation and venepuncture, chemotherapy administration.
