Job overview

This post is for a Locum Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Chronic Pain. Duties will be at Watford General Hospital (WGH) and St Albans City Hospital (SACH).

This post will offer pain sessions as well as experience in a variety of surgical specialties, with an opportunity to develop further special interests, contribute to departmental teaching, development of policies and procedures and any further Quality Improvement projects.

You will be expected to work shifts covering 8:00 am to 9:00 pm; Monday to Friday and weekend working may be required on a rota basis. The total PAs, including SPAs and administrative time, will be approximately 10. This post contains Flexible Sessions where the post holder will be required to cover any sessions within their competency.

Main duties of the job

Candidates will be expected to support the delivery of a high quality MDT pain service meeting local RTT targets and waiting times and possess the ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.

Candidates will also be able to provide safe anaesthesia for paediatric and adult patients across a wide range of surgical specialties, and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Candidates will be able to provide safe anaesthesia for paediatric and adult patients across a wide range of surgical specialties, in both elective and emergency settings include Obstetrics.

Candidates will demonstrate extensive experience in a wide range of Anaesthetic specialties equivalent to a UK CCT in Anaesthesia. Experience in Pre-op Assessment, sedation techniques, ECT and remote site anaesthesia. Candidates must have leadership skills appropriate to participating and leading a multidisciplinary team. They must demonstrate good written, verbal and interpersonal communications and a commitment to professional development and Clinical Governance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Chronic Pain service is provided across the Trust by 3 Consultant Anaesthetists as part of a multidisciplinary team with psychology and physiotherapy. New developments include a multi-disciplinary one stop clinic at St Albans City Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to work sessions equally in both Chronic Pain and Anaesthetics.

We are looking for a new balanced pain consultant who will work as part of a MDT team and cover Pain clinics and theatres at our sites. They will also be expected to work flexibly and to be able to cover joint MDT clinics.

Candidates will be expected to cover Anaesthetic theatre sessions for surgical specialties typical of most district general hospitals and work flexibly dependent on the service needs of Anaesthesia and Pain.

The candidate will be expected to participate in departmental and trust teaching and clinical governance and audit activities.
