The Manual Handling and Ergonomics Trainer plays a crucial role in promoting safety, occupational health, and wellbeing at MKUH.

You will continually strive to improve the quality of training, informed by current evidence-based best practices and national standards.

You will be responsible for leading manual handling training initiatives, ensuring colleagues are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform manual handling tasks safely and effectively.

You will deliver engaging and informative training sessions, conduct training needs analyses, and provide ongoing support to staff to minimise the risk of injuries related to moving and handling patients and loads.

You would also be responsible for the development of Manual Handling Officers and working closely alongside them in developing safe systems of work.

To be the Trust’s recognised competent person on matters relating to manual handling and ergonomics (clinical and non-clinical) training, demonstrating a working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, subject knowledge and professional issues pertinent to the role of working within the limits of own competence.


To assist and deputise (as appropriate) for the Trust Lead Manual Handling and Ergonomics Advisor on delivery and implementation of policies and procedures in relation to manual handling and ergonomics including the Manual Handling & DSE Policies respectively, ensuring these are up to date with current legislation and practice, periodically reviewed and audited and monitored for effectiveness.

Data Analysis

Analyse statistical data, interpret and produce regular training reports on 
departmental activity.

Through training feedback, identify areas of poor practice (either poor manual handling practice or poor risk assessment completion) and develop bespoke training solutions to target improvement.

Education

To design training programmes to meet the needs of the workforce adhering to current best practice and evidence base.

To deliver theory and practical training programmes for all aspects of manual handling operations, which meet the employer’s statutory obligations, and which reflects the level of understanding and learning needs within all staff groups across the Trust. 

Clinical / Non-Clinical

To keep abreast of clinical developments and research that will have implications for safe practice and to regularly attend National Back Exchange or other relevant meetings to maintain awareness of current patient/inanimate manual handling issues and to challenge areas of poor practice

Qualifications and knowledge

  • RN, AHP or equivalent professional qualification including wide practical experience of Manual Handling
  • A recognised moving and handling related qualification (e.g. Back Care Management) or equivalent based on National Back Exchange standards (level 3 or above)
  • A teaching, coaching or training qualification (e.g. PTTLs)
  • Highly specialist knowledge of Manual Handling
  • Be registered with a related professional body such as NMC or HCPC
  • Current member of the National Back Exchange (NBE

  • Comprehensive and current knowledge of Moving and Handling risk management, assessment, and practical application

Experience

  • Experience of participating in a full range of patient handling techniques within the last three years
  • Experience of teaching MDT and responding to their learning needs
  • A practical problem -solving approach to moving and handling issues
  • Understanding of moving and handling equipment and ergonomic changes required to minimize risks to staff
  • Demonstrate a practical application of manual handling legislation
  • Experience preparing, delivering and auditing training
  • Good knowledge base of relevant health and safety legislation and the risk assessment process and their application to manual and patient handling in the workplac
  • Knowledge of Manual Handling policies and procedures and other relevant policies e.g. incident reporting, sickness absence
  • A desire to assist in the development of innovative practices/programmes in moving and handling
