An exciting opportunity has arisen for a for a full-time band 7 dietitian to join our dietetic team at Southampton General Hospital. The post holder will join the team to work in the surgical dietetic team specialising in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and perioperative medicine. 
The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working in a range of specialties, providing acute and community services in adults and paediatrics.  


The HPB service is a regional centre of excellence, performing in excess of 200 major resections each year. We are the UK’s leading centre for laparoscopic liver and pancreatic surgery.  We treat patients with tumours of the liver, bile duct and pancreas. We also manage patients with benign conditions affecting these organs. You will be working as part of a team of HPB dietitians who are well established within the HPB MDT.   
Our perioperative medicine team is a dedicated team made up of anaesthetists, nurses, clinical exercise physiologists, dietitians, psychologists, health care assistants and administrative staff.

Additional Main duties: 

We focus on screening and assessment of patients prior to surgery to optimise recovery and help patients best prepare for surgery. We're one of the leading trusts for perioperative medicine in the UK, and one of the few trusts in the NHS to have a funded prehabilitation service for our patients. You will be the nutritional lead for perioperative medicine working with the team on pathways and standard operating procedures to optimise nutrition in prehabilitation. 


We hold regular internal CPD sessions, and you will have the opportunity to engage in service evaluation, service improvement and clinical research.  

What you’ll do
You will be a key member of the HPB and perioperative medicine multidisciplinary teams.
You will:
•    Be responsible for the specialist provision of a dietetic service to the hepatic, pancreatic and biliary surgery at UHS.
•    Be responsible for provision of nutrition support and education to patients attending perioperative medicine services at UHS.
•    Work in a variety of clinical settings including acute surgical wards, out-patient clinics, and surgical pre-assessment.
•    Provide complex nutritional support to patients with HPB related conditions including pancreatic insufficiency, management of chyle leaks and type 3 diabetes.
•    Work with an experienced team of surgical dietitians covering upper GI, intestinal failure, colorectal, head and neck cancer and general surgery. You will also work closely with the NET dietitian sharing a caseload of patients.
•    Be a key member of the multidisciplinary teams working closely with HPB consultants, perioperative medicine consultants, advanced nurse practitioners, and ward nurses on the specialist surgical wards. 
•    Provide educational talks on the importance of nutrition in perioperative medicine and pancreatic diseases to inform patients, nurses, and junior doctors. 
•    Be involved with the supervision and support of junior dietitians, dietetic assistants, and dietetic students.

What we are looking for
We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in surgical dietetics, with evidence of relevant, strong clinical skills. You should have experience of working with a surgical dietetic caseload and managing complex nutrition support patients. Flexibility, ability to prioritise and manage a busy, complex caseload is essential.  You must have excellent communication skills as well as an empathic nature to help patients manage their condition and be aware of the psychological impact this may have.

  • Masters level qualification or equivalent experience
  • HCPC (Health and Care professions Council) registered dietitian (RD)
  • Evidence of post-graduate training in relevant speciality
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience and involvement with training
  • Evidence of extensive dietetic knowledge and highly specialist expertise in relevant specialist area with recent experience demonstrating this
  • Ability to carry out physical anthropometric measurements and assess nutritional status
  • Demonstration of understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service delivery
