Job overview

Our Critical Care services are delivered across two unit, one on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site and one on the Cheltenham General site.
The two units admit approximately 1,500 patients a year. We support elective surgical services including Upper GI resection work, head and neck cancer services, three counties Gynae-Oncology services, a busy vascular unit. We have a busy medical admissions workload supporting all specialities including interventional cardiology, haematology, oncology, respiratory and renal medicine.
We have the greatest number of paediatric admissions outside of PICU in the South West with between 40 and 50 admissions per year.
We pride ourselves on our MDT approach to patient care and the flat hierarchy within our units. We have the support of an excellent outreach team across both our sites and we work closely together to ensure the best patient care.

Main duties of the job

This role will support the running of both Critical Care units in Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. The post will also support the provision of on call services across both sites.
This role will complement our current junior and middle grade rotas to continue to provide the high level of care for which our units are proud to deliver.

The Critical Care service comprises of 18 other Consultants, 24 resident doctors and ACCPs and over 160 nurses. In addition we work closely and collaboratively with our AHP' colleagues from dietetics, physio and pharmacy. We have a organised and efficient outreach service with whom we also work closely.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide care to Critical Care patients
Reviewing Critical Care referrals from throughout the hospital
Support the provision of an on-call rota in a 1:8 frequency
Support the MDT on Critical Care
Participate in shared decision making for ongoing management of Critical Care patients
Take part in audit 
Assist in recruitment to ongoing research projects

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS OR equivalent
  • Full GMC
Desirable criteria
  • FRCA
  • FFICM or Equivalent
  • ALS + APLS or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 12 months anaesthetics experience
  • Ability to manage independently a airway out of hours
  • Minimu of 6 - 12 months ICU experience

Knowledge/Skills

Essential criteria
  • Flexibiity and willingness to work together with colleagues to support on call commitments
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues
  • Ability to think laterally
  • Ability to site CVC's, Vascath independently
