Maxillofacial and Orthodontics

Band 5 depending on qualifications and experience.    

Hours: 22.6 hrs permanent & 26 hours fixed term for 1 year

Can be one full time position or 2-part time

 

We are seeking to recruit a Specialist Dental nurse to work within our busy Outpatient Department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a progressive and developing environment.

Main duties of the job

To provide and maintain a high standard of chair side dental nursing care, for Oral / Maxillofacial Surgery, and Orthodontic clinics.

 

To provide a Dental Radiological service for the department.

 

To ensure that the best possible Dental Nursing Care is delivered to patients including those with complex medical, physical and emotional needs.

 

Ensure the delivery of high quality professional care throughout the department.

 

Represent the department in a professional manner at all times.

 

Ensure all lines of communication are identified and used effectively

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       To ensure that patients and visitors needs are met in a courteous, helpful & compassionate way, which may require the use of different styles of communication.

·       Act as a named nurse for Department clinics.

·       Responsible for administrative duties in clinic i.e: clinic sheets, consent forms and return appointment slips.

·       Obtain individual patient medical history as required.

·       Advise patient on wearing, function and care of occlusal bite splints.

·       Assist clinicians in operating theatres as scrub nurse when required.

·   Accountable for appropriate disposal of clinic waste e.g. sharps, swabs etc in line with Trust policies and procedures.

·       Provide chair side assistance for Orthodontic clinics.

·       Assist clinicians facilitating four-handed orthodontic procedures.

·       Ensure appropriate instrumentation & equipment is available for relevant procedures.

·       Ensure that orientation of all brackets & bands are up to date, and the surgery is fully stocked.

·       Observe decontamination policy when handling and sterilising dental impressions.

·       Impart basic Oral Hygiene instruction to patients and advise on care of appliances.

·       Assist in the construction of fixed appliances.

·       Collate necessary medical records e.g. Study models, notes, reports, radiographs etc.

·       Provide chair side assistance for MaxilloFacial clinics

·       Assist with head and neck trauma patients referred by Accident & Emergency Department utilising necessary expertise.

·       Assist with the manual handling of patients within a difficult confined area.

·       Assist the clinician with invasive surgical procedures.

·       Set up sterile surgical trolleys with all relevant equipment for the proposed procedure.

·        Ensuring all specialist equipment & materials are provided

·       Act as the second appropriate person during intravenous sedation sessions.

·       Monitor patients clinically and electronically on pulse-oximeters, during surgical procedures while under a sedative medication.

·       Act as a scrub nurse dealing with blood, saliva & specimens

·       Administer Basic Life Support as necessary.

·       Take intra oral and extra oral radiographic examinations following a clinical prescription observing radiological policies and procedures.

·       Critique and assess quality of images.

·       Assess suitability of patient prior to radiation exposure.

·       Deputise on occasion, in the absence of the Dental Nurse Team Manager

·       Ensure all mandatory training implemented by the Trust is carried out.

·       Maintain high standards of working protocols/guidelines, and suggest changes when necessary.

·  Check portable drill and calibrate machine and motors prior to surgery.

·       Check and test Blood Glucose monitor.

·  Check cryo-therapy equipment is in working order and ensure necessary gas is available.

·       Be conversant with policies and procedures relating to Fire and Health & Safety.

·       Report all accidents and complaints in accordance with Trust policies and assist in investigations of complaints and accidents as required.

·       Ensure that the maintenance of control of drugs/health & safety/ decontamination/data protection/COSHH statutory requirements are met within his/her sphere of control.

·  Work closely with medical colleagues providing dental nursing expertise.

·    Maintain effective communication links both formal and informal with all staff and external professional agencies and bodies.
