Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) in Salisbury for 2 full time Healthcare Science Practitioner/Genomic Technologists to join our dynamic team dedicated to providing high quality genomic testing to improve patient outcomes. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals with previous experience of working in a diagnostic laboratory.

The WGLS is a new integrated genomics testing service formed from the amalgamation of Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, now WGLS (Salisbury), and Molecular Pathology which is based at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). The WGLS is part of the Central & South Genomic Laboratory Hub. We provide an in-house diagnostic service for cancer and rare disease testing in accordance with the NHS England Genomic Test Directory and are also engaged in the development and ramping up of the NHSE Genomic Medicine Service Whole Genome Sequencing programme for our Wessex patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOULL DO

You will join a team of technologists who carry out both rare disease and cancer sample processing, utilising a range of genetic technologies. We currently have a vacancy in both our molecular and cytogenetic technologist teams.
You will analyse data and prepare reports for authorisation by scientific staff.
You will be expected to assist in the training of junior members of the team.
In addition, the post holder will be required to support activities such as quality, including compliance with laboratory accreditation standards, equipment maintenance, audits and participate in the departments training programme.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

The successful applicant must have a relevant degree BSc degree. Previous experience working in a diagnostic laboratory is essential and experience in a genetics laboratory would be desirable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Employment will be with UHS but the role will be based at WGLS (Salisbury) within Salisbury District Hospital. There are future plans to re-locate to a joint facility with WGLS (Southampton) in the Southampton area once a suitable site has been identified (with a minimum 1 year notice prior to relocation).
