Job overview

Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has invested in the recruitment of newly qualified midwives who will require support to achieve their full potential as registered midwives.

The Preceptee Support Midwife will work with the practice development midwife who oversees newly qualified midwives and is responsible for supporting the preceptee midwives in clinical practice as well as providing pastoral support. This will be with the intention of enhancing the preceptee midwives’ experience and facilitating retention. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to work in collaboration with the practice development, clinical governance and operational teams by providing individualized support in the clinical environment to newly qualified midwives. Working across all maternity service settings, the job holder will be responsible for supporting newly qualified midwives in clinical practice, and act as a visible support for preceptees. The post holder will also provide pastoral support to newly qualified midwives.

The post holder will be capable of working across all areas of maternity care, including the antenatal clinic, community settings, delivery suite, midwifery led unit, Shere and St Catherine’s Wards. The post holder will have expert clinical skills, including that of cannulation and suturing.

The post holder will be accountable for their midwifery practice and will be responsible for their own professional development. You will adhere to the policies and protocols of the Trust and the NMC.

This midwife is expected to carry out all relevant forms of clinical care in periods of maternity escalation. The post-holder is expected to supervise junior staff and to be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including basic and/or post-basic students.

Band 6 Preceptee Support Midwife 18.75 Hours

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Maternity Service is recruiting a Preceptee Support Midwife.

This successful candidate will work with the Practice Development Midwife who oversees newly qualified midwives and will work clinically alongside the preceptees to support them to develop their confidence in clinical practice as well as providing pastoral support to optimise their experience and support retention.

The post holder will be required to be flexible in their approach to shifts and be able to work across the seven day week, including night shifts. It is also expected that they will be confident to work in all areas of the maternity service, including antenatal clinic, community settings, delivery suite, theatre and the wards and to be expert in all key clinical skills, including cannulation and suturing.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife – Part 10 of the register
  • Shows consolidation of experience through achievement of Competency Skills in midwifery
  • Degree level or above midwifery qualification
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification/ Mentor preparation course

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a practising midwife
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of organising own workload and leading where appropriate
  • Experience of managing a ward area
  • Experience of working within the community setting
