Job overview

This Specialty Manager post is a key position within the Division’s management structure, responsible for providing day-to-day operational management and support, in addition to leading jointly with clinical leads a large amount of service transformation and networked working with other local district general and teaching hospitals.

The Specialty Manager for acute medicine is jointly responsible with the Clinical Director and Matron for the effective strategic and operational management of the Strategic Business Unit’s (SBU), ensuring the delivery of high quality patient services

Main duties of the job

The Specialty Manager with the Clinical Director and Matron will provide overall leadership and direction to acute medicine.

 

The post-holder will co-ordinate the activities of the medical SBU (alongside the managers and matrons of the other medicine departments), as well as working with allied health professional teams that support medical patients, thereby ensuring seamless clinical services are provided to patients.

The Specialty Manager will develop and manage the activity plans for the SBU ensuring that service pathways and capacity and demand analysis is understood to ensure the delivery of outstanding services. This will include playing a key role in identifying opportunities for clinical innovation and modernisation, the delivery of all operational performance targets, financial management, bed utilisation and management. Continually improving the quality of services to patients and redesigning services to meet best practice standards, improving efficiency and effectiveness and available resources.

The post-holder will be responsible for securing the commitment of all staff in the SBU to organisational change and continuous improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented operational manager to join the Division of Access and Medicine as a Specialty Manager for Urgent & Emergency Care, and Aging & Health SBUs.

Joining us at this critical time, you’ll be fundamental to managing the day to day operations of both Urgent & Emergency Care, and Aging & Health SBUs, focusing on patient flow and SEDC services in addition to working on specific projects. This role will work in close liaison with the Head of Services, Clinical Directors and Matrons, and is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership to ensure services continue to improve and develop. Leading and managing a complex set of priorities, your leadership skills and innovative approach to change management will ensure the Division continues to succeed.

We are looking for someone who has had some previous operational management responsibility, who can work in a rapidly changing environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required as well as the ability to influence and motivate at all levels. Strong analytical and problem solving skills are required to support you in understanding and delivering the required performance and previous development of business cases would be advantageous. This post will lead and manage key areas including complaints, governance, risk, and redesign projects across the whole division and will deputise for the Head of Service as required.
