Job overview

The specialty doctor’s role will be to facilitate mental health recovery in the community for people over the age of 65 and those under the age of 65 with a diagnosis of dementia. The post holder will provide specialist and holistic assessment, treatment and continuing care for older adults who suffer from a range of mental health problems including dementia.

 

Main duties of the job

The doctor will work collaboratively with the service users, their family, carers, and friends. The job will be carried out in partnership with the community mental health team and other professionals involved in the care of the service user.

The post holder will work predominantly with the duty team carrying out urgent assessments independently or jointly with the team CPNs, OTs and psychologists. There will be occasions of joint work with Adult Social Care and the Primary Care Team

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Specialty Doctor will have the following responsibilities:

·        Clinical Assessment and treatment of patients over 65 and those under 65 with dementia in the community.

 

·        To provide supervision of other clinical staff attached to the team and contribute to the multidisciplinary working of the service. 

 

·        The post holder will work alongside the team manager and other Consultant Psychiatrists in the team to ensure the effective functioning and development of the service.

 

·        The specialty doctor will be expected to provide direct clinical care and ensure medical involvement in the CPA process.

 

·        Work collaboratively with other agencies. In particular liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the team.

 

·        Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, on-going management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records system – training will be provided where needed. Completion of CPA documentation when necessary.

 

·        The specialty doctor will be expected to contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant agencies. This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit with appropriate administrative support.

 

·        The specialty doctor will be expected to attend most regular directorate managerial meeting as necessary, particularly Joint Consultant Committee, Medical Staff Committee and Directorate/Managerial liaison meeting.

 

·        The specialty doctor would be expected to participate in both a CPD peer group and a clinical supervision group with fellow specialty doctor.

 

·        Specialty doctor would be expected to maintain their own programme of training and CPD accreditation with the support of their Lead consultant/Associate Medical Director/Clinical Director.

 

·        The specialty doctor will normally cross-cover with the rest of medical staff in the team for annual leave, study leave and brief periods of sickness absence.

 

·        Day-time responsibility for Mental Health Act assessments and related MHA administration of patients of the team’s service.

 

·        In exceptional circumstances, as applies to all staff, Specialty Doctors may be expected to vary their job plans and to work flexibly (e.g. at another site, at other times) to meet the needs of wider Trust services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC
  • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time Postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable criteria
  • Some or all parts of MRCPsych or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Held hospital appointments in psychiatry at SHO/CT or equivalent.
  • To exercise an intermediate level of clinical responsibility as delegated by the consultant in charge.
  • Ability to work through a collaborative multi-disciplinary framework.
  • Ability to contribute to effective team working. Capacity to prioritise workload.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with a range of professionals.
  • Must have good skills in communication with patients, relatives, colleagues and staff of other organisations. Good spoken and written English.
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching medical undergraduates
  • Experience at ST or SD level or equivalent
