Main duties of the job

We have a brilliant opportunity for a curious and enthusiastic HCPC Registered SLT to join our large acute team.  This post is ideal to develop your knowledge and experience in a stimulating and supportive environment alongside skilled colleagues from a range of professions.

The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working across the range of specialties, providing acute services in both adults and paediatrics. The newly opened onsite Wellbeing Hub is an excellent resource for staff complete with a café, various meeting spaces, a free gym and changing facilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities
If you are the successful candidate, you will:
•    Work closely with colleagues in the SLT team.
•    Provide regular communication assessment and therapy ((and swallowing once competencies 
        achieved).
•    Be innovative in your approach to patient care and service delivery, whilst seeking support if 
        you require it.
•    Actively support patients and their families/carers through individual or group sessions.
•    Be actively involved in clinical effectiveness projects, and
•    Offer training and support to SLTs, students and other staff.

Person specification

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • HCPC (Health and Care professions Council) registered speech and language therapist
  • Within 18 months of appointment to be able to complete dysphagia competencies
  • Ability to communicate information fluently, confidently and effectively to a diverse range of people: e.g. with patients, carers, managers and other health care professionals
  • Ability to demonstrate a practical and sensitive approach, and flexibility in working style when applying clinical judgement to complex clinical issues
  • Ability to create rapport and professionally manage relationships with colleagues, patients and carers and the emotional challenges this presents
  • Demonstrate a holistic approach to treatment.
  • Evidence of ability to cope with unpredictable events and varying clinical and non-clinical work pressures
  • Demonstrate ability to independently plan and prioritise own workload in order to meet deadlines
  • Evidence of highly developed auditory and perceptive skills
  • Completion of relevant training and evidence of competence will be required prior to any activity carried out around eating, drinking, and swallowing
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and relevant specialist groups
  • Ability to cover “out of hours” commitments on agreed occasions
