Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic substantive, full-time consultant gastroenterologist with a subspecialty interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

You will join a team of twelve gastroenterologists at West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who enjoy working together and supporting each other.

You should be a competent clinician and endoscopist with a CCT in gastroenterology and general medicine and experience working within the NHS. To complement our team, you should demonstrate interest in managing complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease. We have a dynamic IBD team with 4 experienced IBD nurse specialists, regular MDT meetings and close links to our colorectal colleagues. We are seeking to expand our team to manage our demand, develop new treatment pathways and increase our research portfolio for the benefit of our patients.

This post has 10 programmed activities. There is a 1:10 on-call rota for “consultant of the week” inpatient cover and overnight on-call for GI bleed.

We are looking for the prospective candidate to start as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

Consultant Gastroenterologist with a subspeciality interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the smooth running, governance, and further development of the IBD service including:

  • Independent care of patients with complex IBD
  • Actively lead and contribute to IBD-MDTs
  • Support and training of the IBD nurses
  • Foster close teamworking within the IBD team
  • Developing IBD care pathways
  • Support networking with internal and external providers
  • Support IBD data collection/ audit and database
  • Implement national policies and guidance and local GIRFT recommendations relating to IBD care
  • Develop departmental IBD research portfolio
  • Maintain appropriate CPD
  • Endoscopy (Elective, training, and inpatient emergency)
  • Outpatient work (clinics, referral vetting, GP advice and guidance)
  • Inpatient work (Consultant of the week to cover GI ward, Ward referrals, ED in-reach)
  • Weekend work (6 hours on site ward and emergency endoscopy)

The management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the clinical lead for the Gastroenterology (Dr Mark Fullard who is responsible to the Divisional Director (Niall Keenan), the Medical Director and Chief Executive and Trust Board.
