Clinical Fellow in Proton Therapy

Locally Employed Doctor

Job overview

The clinical fellowship in proton therapy is a one year fellowship programme, allowing the fellow to gain experience in both clinical and research experience in proton therapy. The post will be split of clinical (80%) and research/CPD (20%).

Suitable trainees would have completed their FRCR examinations or equivalent and are senior specialty trainees in Clinical Oncology. Overseas applications are welcome.

Candidates to the post can expect to complete four monthly clinical rotations in disease sites: paediatrics, head and neck, CNS and skull base, sarcoma, lymphoma oesophageal and HPB, lung and breast. Exact details of the rotation can be discussed and tailored to suit the learning needs of the appointed fellow.

Fellows will have opportunities to lead and actively participate in research projects. In addition, there are management and leadership skill development opportunities during the fellowship.

Main duties of the job

The medical establishment provides specialist care for patients receiving proton therapy with five consultant clinical oncologists supporting paediatrics, four supporting head and neck tumours, three supporting adult CNS, four supporting sarcoma, one supporting oesophageal and HPB, one supporting breast, and another supporting lung currently.

Working for our organisation

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
