West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

 

Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Functional Skills English teacher, who has worked with learners from Entry level 1 to Level 2.  Assessed all levels and components of Functional Skills English and has experience of the standardisation and internal verification processes for both the Entry level exams and the Speaking, Listening and Communication.

 

The majority of teaching is on a 1:1 basis, which primarily takes place on the ward. Each ward environment is different based on the clinical need of the patient. Sometimes you will be working in a quiet area, but other times the communal area of the ward.

 

Working hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:30, except Wednesdays which are 12:45 to 21:00.  There can be some flexibility on the days you work.  The hospital is open all year so you are not restricted to school holidays for annual leave.  All work, planning and marking, is completed on site and within your paid hours.

To support patients in accessing educational opportunities, at different levels, to achieve competence and qualifications relevant to them and their abilities.

 

To demonstrate a flexible and inclusive approach when offering educational support to patients, who can have extreme mental health presentations and/or be in very restricted circumstances.

 

To be flexible with regard to the needs of the patients and the organisation.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Minimum Level 3 qualification in English
  • Level 5 teaching qualification in post 16 or secondary education
  • Willingness to do further training if required.
Desirable criteria
  • DTLLS
  • DET
  • PGCE, Cert Ed
  • Level 5 specialist diploma in English/literacy
  • ESOL/TEFL qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching adults with challenging behaviours.
  • Experience planning and development of educational sessions.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience of delivering functional skills English and completing exams and accreditation.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement & evaluate programmes of activity.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within a mental health environment, prison or with people with challenging behaviour and/or learning difficulties.

  • Proven communication skills (written & oral)
  • Advanced Level IT Skills- Competent to Level 2 ICT
  • Works well in a team
  • Ability to organise and co-ordinate services during the absence of more senior staff
