As one of 15 Health Innovation Networks (HINs) across England, we connect and support academics, NHS, industry and others to bring fresh energy to old problems, inspire thinking to new ones and adopt innovative practices at scale.

This post is part of the Insight team at Health Innovation Wessex. The Insight team supports people in the health and care system by generating insights which facilitate the identification, implementation and sustained adoption of innovation. This role would suit an individual who has experience using predominantly qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, preferably in mixed methods evaluations or applied research. 

This role will coordinate the delivery of Insight team projects, supporting qualitative and mixed methods evaluations of innovations and their adoption in NHS and care settings. You will have good knowledge of various forms of qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. You will also have good knowledge of health and care systems to understand the context in which insights will be required to facilitate the adoption of proven innovations.

Based at Southampton Science Park in Chilworth in a bright modern office easily accessible from the M3, M27 and Southampton Parkway train station, the location offers free parking with a café area and networking spaces on site. 27 acres of the Science Park site are designated a protected Conservation Area and open to staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are an ambitious organisation, looking for passionate and motivated people to join us with a proven track record of delivery. You will need tenacity to succeed, great communication and project management skills, an ability to build new relationships quickly, and the capability to organise, collect, and analyse qualitative data often within mixed methods evaluations.

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of past experiences – whether that be clinical, NHS management or from industry – and an appreciation of the challenges involved with innovation deployment and transformation in the NHS is an advantage to succeed in this role. Past experience of commissioning, transformation and project management is also advantageous.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Professionally qualified or a relevant post graduate qualification
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Knowledge of best practice and/or professional guidelines relevant to the area of evaluation, and specifically qualitative methods
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of best practice and/or professional guidelines relevant to the area of mixed methods evaluations
  • Project Management training (e.g. PRINCE II)
  • Specific training in evaluation practice or advanced analytical skills
  • UK driving license

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of the NHS
  • Project management experience in an NHS, care service or academic setting
  • Experience of conducting common qualitative methods of data collection (i.e. interviewing, running focus groups, observation, case studies)
  • Experience of undertaking thematic analysis (i.e. coding, theme generation, dealing with large volumes of textual data)
  • Interest and willingness to extend knowledge in quantitative evaluation and mixed methods evaluation
  • Managing own workload and prioritising demands on time
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a customer/client focused environment e.g. to deliver projects for a clinical service, or an innovator
  • Experience of leading, designing evaluations and/or reporting evaluations
  • Experience of multiple qualitative methods (e.g. thematic analysis, narrative analysis, comparative analysis , ethnography)
  • Knowledge and use of qualitative software packages (e.g. NVivo)
  • Experience in collecting, analysing and presenting qualitative data from digital sources, e.g. video, blogs, online content
  • Experience of preparing programme level reports for performance and assurance purposes
  • Knowledge or experience of NHS or University ethical and Information Governance legislation, practice and procedures
  • Experience of undertaking analysis of quantitative data
  • Experience of working on mixed methods projects
  • Synthesis of quantitative findings with qualitative findings to generate rich reports
  • Academic publications
  • Scheduling, chairing and note-taking at meetings
