We would like to invite applicants to apply for the Clinical Fellow post in Intensive Care Medicine at Ipswich Hospital. 

The Critical Care is a 22 bedded modern facility that occupies the entire first floor of the Garrett Anderson Centre. It is an integrated ICU and HDU with 4 negative pressure side rooms and a dedicated fully equipped paediatric room. Every bed space is equipped with Hamilton intellivent ventilators, we have 8 haemofilter machines; and are advocates of point of care Ultrasound and ECHO. In addition we have an excellent electrophysiology service with the capability of continuous EEG monitoring.

The successful candidate will join an established and enthusiastic team in delivering high quality Critical Care services at Ipswich hospital. The post holder will be expected to undertake medical review of patients on Critical Care as well as accept referrals as part of the 055 ICU bleep holder role and participate in an on call role.

You may be required to undertake transfers of patients requiring Level Critical care to the regional neurosurgical and cardiothoracic centre after completing the relevant transfer training and be involved with the stabilisation of Critically unwell children prior to transfer to regional PICUs by specialist transfer teams.

There may be opportunities to pursue further training opportunities in theatres and simulation – however your core responsibility will be towards Critical Care. There is also opportunities to work towards basic accreditation in Echocardiography such as FICE.

You shifts will be predominantly cover normal daytime, evenings and weekend days.

We deliver care services from two main hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, six community hospitals, high street clinics and in patients’ own homes. We have nearly 10,000 staff, with an annual budget of over £650 million. We are the largest NHS organisation in the East Anglia.

We are building for better care with an exciting capital development programme across our sites – totalling £100million over the next five years.

We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.

We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

The successful post holder is offered experience in all aspects of Critical Care apart from Cardiac and Neuro surgery. Ipswich hospital is tertiary referral centre for spinal surgery emergencies.

Trainees rotate from the East of England School of anaesthesia; and we have rotating Doctors in ACCS & Internal Medicine Trainees.

You will be expected to participate in 1 in 8 on call rota and the main work will be out of hours and some fixed sessions during week days in Intensive Care at the registrar level.

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Minimum of 6 months anaesthetic training with basic airway competence
  • Current ALS or commitment to achieve within 6 months of commencing post
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Evidence of achievement of core anaesthesia competencies
  • Experience working in ITU at CT3 and above.
  • Understanding of NHS management structure
  • Team worker
  • Good interpersonal skills, especially communication

  • Intercalated BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent
  • ATLS, APLS,
  • Periods of training in related specialty, eg Medicine, A&E
  • Evidence of some management training, eg attendance at specific management course, specific management qualification
  • Higher degree (MD, PhD)
