Then, consider joining our friendly, dynamic team based here at Newham University Hospital. We are looking to expand our team of 16 consultants (3 with PEM sub-specialty training). We pride ourselves on a consultant-led and delivered service and believe this is key to excellence in Emergency Care. Newham University Hospital in East London sees over 90,000 emergency patients every year. It is a Trauma Unit with strong links to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal London Hospital, which is also part of Barts Health. Newham is the largest borough within the Trust’s catchment area. The local population is very young and diverse, the case-mix exciting and varied, often with high acuity. There is a separate Paediatric Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work across all areas of the department, including our co-located Adult and Paediatric Clinical Decision Units, as well as Adult and Paediatric Same Day Emergency Care. You will provide shop-floor supervision to a large team of 66 junior doctors (including ST3-6 trainees, ACCS and CESR doctors), ACPs, and PAs.
We are keen to ensure all our consultants are supported to develop, learn and maintain sub-specialty interests, e.g. Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Pre-Hospital and Community Emergency Medicine. Opportunities exist within the Trust for sessions in Pre-Hospital Care as well as the Remote Emergency Access Co-ordination Hub (REACH) which provides virtual assessment of 999 referrals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Enhanced study leave opportunities during the first 12 months, ensuring our consultants have the skills and professional development they feel they need to deliver high-quality care.
· Leadership development – Barts Health run an outstanding leadership development programme in partnership with the King’s Fund. We support aspiring and established leaders, with opportunities to apply for leadership roles both within Emergency Medicine and the wider Trust. These roles attract a responsibility allowance (£7,500 – £15,000 p.a.) in addition to time within the job plan.
· Service and quality improvement – additional time within job plans (for example, 3 SPA: 7 DCC) can be provided to focus on key departmental service and quality improvement (QI) projects.
· Education and training – the team are committed to delivering high-quality education and training to junior doctors, ACPs, PAs and medical students. Educational roles (such as Clinical Educator) may be applied for within the trust and within job planning by interested applicants.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Entry on the Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine, or that at time of interview the applicant can produce evidence that he/she is within 6 months of CCT date and is expected to achieve CCT
- Full GMC Registration MB ChB or equivalent
- FCEM or Equivalent (‘equivalence’ must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee)
Desirable criteria
- Academic distinction/prizes
- BSc/MSc
- MRCP or equivalent additional higher qualification
Knowledge Clinical Expertise in Specialty / Sub-Speciality
Essential criteria
- Experience of leading care in a Major Trauma Centre
- Appropriate for level of experience
- Demonstrably able to manage on-going medical and surgical critical care in the resuscitation room
Desirable criteria
- Experience in Acute Medicine Experience of stroke evaluation and thrombolysis
- Experience of Major Incident Planning / Training
Training Expected
Essential criteria
- ALS, ATLS, APLS and MIMMS provider or equivalent
- Completion of Specialist training in Emergency Medicine or within 6 months of CCT or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of appropriate Faculty Development towards Educational Supervision
- Instructor status in more than one course
- Experience of organising teaching / training programmes
