Job overview

We are looking for a new member for our database team of 3 people to collect, process and quality assuring epidemiological data using our bespoke database system in support of the National Registry for Radiation Workers  and the Nuclear Weapons Test Participants study studies .

The Radiation Epidemiology Group carries out research, provides advice concerning to the health effects of ionising radiation based on two very long term studies the National Registry for Radiation Workers and the Nuclear Weapons Test Participants study.

The National Registry for Radiation Workers (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/radiation-workers-and-their-health-national-study ) is world class long-term study of the health effects of occupational radiation exposure in the UK. The cohort now comprises around 300K individuals and is one of the most important sources of epidemiological data concerning the effects of low-level radiation exposure in the world today.  The analysis  drawn from the cohort provides the basis of  the evidence the group publishes. The group also manages a similar study of service men that attended the British Nuclear tests in Australia and the Pacific Islands in the 1950’s and 60’s (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nuclear-weapons-test-participants-study).

The quality and reliability of the results obtained from these studies is directly affected by the quality of the data so ensuring the data in these studies is as good as possible is very important.

The post holder will:

  • Develop the skills to process a variety of data types into the NRRW and NWTPS epidemiological studies.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the databases and the data they hold, including potential uses and limitations for radiation epidemiology research.
  • Develop the skills to analyse the data to check for errors and inconsistencies and to implement a range of solutions.
  • Liaise with data providers in industry as well as the NHS and elsewhere.
  • Observe and comply with Data Protection and related legislation.
Contribute to the information provision response, ensuring timely and appropriate responses in accordance with all Standard Operating Procedures and liaising, where necessary, with colleagues (or providers) concerning issues of data interpretation.
